What to Do in Lisbon Today – A Local’s Guide to a Perfect Day (That Always Works)

So… you just woke up in Lisbon, the sun is out (or maybe not, but we’ll pretend), and you have no plans for the day. First of all: excellent choice. Second: don’t panic — I got you.

As a local who spends a lot of time walking around with a camera and a pastel de nata in hand, I’ve come up with the perfect spontaneous day in Lisbon that works no matter the season, weather, or level of jet lag.

Let’s go!

☕️ 10:00 – Start slow, start sweet

No rush. Sleep in. You’re on holiday.
Start your day with a strong bica (espresso) and maybe two (or five) pastéis de nata at Manteigaria or Fábrica da Nata. Eat them warm. Always warm.

Pro tip: eat them standing up like a local. Sitting down is for amateurs.

🚶‍♀️ 11:00 – Wander through Alfama

The soul of Lisbon. Cobblestones, hanging laundry, old windows, Fado in the air. Get lost on purpose. Look up, look back, look down — just not at Google Maps.

And yes, if you take a photo of a yellow tram, it’s totally fine. We all do it.

🍽 13:00 – Time to eat. Always time to eat.

Head to Graça or Campo de Ourique for a local lunch spot. Try a bifana, some bacalhau, or just go full tourist and order prego no pão with a cold beer.

If the restaurant has paper tablecloths and an older senhor serving, you’re in the right place.

🌊 15:00 – Riverside reset

Take the tram or walk down to the Cais do Sodré area. Sit by the river. Watch the boats. Listen to street musicians. Breathe. No one’s in a rush here, and neither should you be.

Bonus: try a ginjinha or a sangria if you’re in the mood.

📸 17:00 – Golden Hour Magic (the best time for photos)

This is when Lisbon gets ridiculously pretty. Head to Miradouro da Senhora do Monte or Miradouro da Graça, or anywhere with a view.

And hey — this is also the perfect time for a photo session 😉
