How to Choose a Wedding Photographer in Portugal

Twelve questions that separate a clear quote from a vague one, with what a good answer sounds like and how to compare packages side by side.

Updated October 2026 12 questions with good answers Lisbon, Sintra, Porto, Douro, Algarve

To choose a wedding photographer in Portugal, check the style on full galleries, then ask twelve practical questions about coverage, delivery, backups, contract and travel before you pay a deposit.

Hiring a wedding photographer in Portugal from abroad means a vague answer is hard to fix later from another time zone. We wrote the list we would want to be asked, and we answer the points for our own wedding photography as a worked example. This is a general guide, not legal advice, and where it touches venue rules we link the official source.

Quick answer

Look at two or three complete wedding galleries, then ask 12 questions: hours of coverage, one or two photographers, video, what “edited” means, delivery date, backup gear, rain plan, language, contract and deposit, travel outside the base city, venue rules and a planning call. Write the answers down next to each quote, then compare the quotes row by row.

How do you choose a wedding photographer in Portugal?

Start with the pictures, not the price. A portfolio is a highlight reel, so ask to see one or two whole weddings, ideally in a place like yours: a hot afternoon in the Douro and a windy cliff in Sintra ask different things of a photographer.

Then narrow the list with questions, because style only tells you what the photographer likes to shoot. The answers below tell you how the day will actually run.

  1. Shortlist by style. Pick three photographers whose full galleries feel like the day you want, documentary or posed, bright or moody.
  2. Ask the same 12 questions. Send them in one message and note who answers every point and who skips some.
  3. Compare in writing. Put hours, photographer count, photo count, delivery date and travel into one table.
  4. Hold a call before the deposit. Ten minutes shows you how they plan, listen and explain.

How many hours of coverage and how many photographers do you need?

Question 1: how many hours are covered, and when do they start and stop? A good answer names a start (getting ready, first look or the ceremony) and an end (first dance, cake or a set time), and says what happens if the day runs long. “Full day” should mean the same thing in every quote you compare.

Question 2: one photographer or two? With one photographer, you get one angle at a time. With two, one can stay with each partner while they get ready, or one can shoot the ceremony wide while the other catches faces.

Smaller days

One photographer

Works well for weddings under 100 guests where the story moves in one place. Ask how the photographer handles two spaces at once, such as the couple arriving while guests are seated.

Fits intimate weddings and elopements
Most chosen

Two photographers

Both partners are covered while getting ready, and the ceremony is shot from two positions. Ask who leads and whether both are edited to the same look.

Fits larger guest lists and busy timelines

Question 3: is video part of the package, and who shoots it? If a film is offered, ask whether the videographer is part of the same team, how long the film runs and whether audio of the vows is recorded. A mixed team shares a timeline, so they do not stand in each other’s frames.

What does “400 edited photos” really mean, and when do you get them?

Question 4: how many edited photos, and how is “edited” defined? A number without hours is not comparable. Ask whether it is the minimum you will receive and whether black and white copies of the same frame are counted.

Question 5: when is the gallery delivered, in what resolution and for how long is it online? A date in the contract beats “a few weeks”. Ask for full-resolution files for printing and smaller web files for sharing, and ask whether a private link stays active after the first month.

Those are the figures on our wedding page, and we show them here so you can see what a clear answer looks like: a number, a delivery window and a private online gallery. Ask every photographer for the same three things.

What happens if something goes wrong, and what should the contract cover?

Weddings are one-shot events, so the first three questions here are about contingencies. A confident photographer answers them quickly.

  • Question 6: what backup do you carry? Look for spare camera bodies, spare lenses and memory cards written to two places. Ours is simple: backup cameras, lenses and cards are always on site.
  • Question 7: what is the plan if it rains? Ask which covered locations they have already scouted at your venue, and how they shoot portraits under cloud.
  • Question 8: which language will planning and the day run in? You want clear English on the planning call and on the day, plus a photographer who can coordinate with a Portuguese-speaking venue team. We run everything in English.

Question 9: what exactly do the contract and deposit lock in? The deposit should hold a date and a named photographer or team, not just a place in a queue. Ask what happens if you move the date, if the photographer is ill, or if you cancel.

A good contract lists dates, coverage hours, delivered files, usage rights for your photos, who the substitute is if something happens, and the payment schedule. If a clause is unclear, ask for it in plain English. We hold your date with a deposit.

Check the small print on usage. Ask whether the photographer may share your photos publicly, and whether you can say no. It is a normal question and a good photographer will have an answer ready.

Tell us your date, venue and guest count, and we will answer all twelve questions for your day.

Ask about your wedding

Will your photographer travel to Sintra, Porto, the Douro or the Algarve?

Question 10: what does travel outside the base city cost, and who covers transport and a night away? We cover weddings across Lisbon, Sintra, Cascais, Porto, the Douro Valley and the Algarve. Sintra and Cascais are part of the Lisbon area, while printed albums and travel outside it are add-ons, quoted on request.

Ask for the add-on to be written into the quote. Porto and the Algarve are real journeys, so a night away should not appear as a surprise on the invoice.

Lisbon to Porto by trainabout 2h40 to 3h15 on direct CP trains, per EveryRail (CP check of June 2026)
Lisbon to Faro by roadabout 278 km, roughly 2h30 via the A2, per Road Genius
Porto to Pinhão (Douro)roughly 125 to 135 km by road, about 1h30 to 1h45, per Daytrip and TravelProfy
Sintra and Cascaispart of the Lisbon area, which our wedding page treats as the base for travel add-ons

Treat these as planning figures, since traffic and timetables vary. If you marry in the Douro, ask whether the photographer arrives the evening before.

What are the venue rules and permissions for wedding photos?

Question 11: which rules apply at your venue, and who checks them? Churches, quintas, palaces and public viewpoints all have their own rules on flash, positions, drones and access. A photographer who has worked there before can tell you in one message.

Sintra shows why it matters. As of October 2026, Parques de Sintra’s image capture page says wedding photo sessions pay a heritage fee at the monument’s ticket office in person. The fee covers six people including the photographer, tripods, external flash, reflectors and drones are not permitted, and photography is not allowed inside the monuments. Our Sintra photographer page covers the open-air options.

Light is the other constraint. Lisbon sunset times on sunrise-and-sunset.com are 21:01 on 15 June 2027, 19:44 on 15 September 2027 and, in December 2026, 17:15. In December a 17:00 ceremony leaves almost no daylight for portraits, so ask your photographer to build the timeline backwards from sunset. Our best time to propose in Portugal guide has sunset tables for more months.

Rules change and are set by each venue. Confirm with the venue and, for the marriage itself, with the civil registry. This guide is not legal advice.

How do you compare wedding photography packages fairly?

Put every quote into the same five rows: coverage hours, photographers, edited photo count, delivery date and travel. If one row is empty, ask. A package that looks cheaper is often missing a second photographer, an end time or a delivery date.

To show the structure, here are our three wedding packages. These are guide prices, and final pricing depends on date, location and coverage. Each includes a private online gallery, delivery within 6 weeks and a pre-wedding planning call.

What should you plan before you book?

Question 12: do we get a planning call, a timeline and a shot list? A call a few weeks ahead is where times, locations, family groups and the venue rules turn into a plan. Bring a short list of the pictures that matter to you: grandparents, a particular reading, a view you chose the venue for.

Booking early matters in the busy season. Our wedding page says May to October fills first and popular Saturdays go a year ahead, while an off-season wedding usually needs three to four months. Foreign guests who fly in also need valid travel documents, which we cover in Portugal entry requirements.

The paperwork for a legal marriage is a separate track with its own deadlines, and our guide to getting married in Portugal as a foreigner covers it in detail. If you are planning a small ceremony for two, how to elope in Sintra shows how a shorter day is structured. Whatever you decide, send the date, venue and guest count so we can tell you honestly how we would cover your day.

Common questions

How do I choose a wedding photographer in Portugal?

Look at two or three complete galleries for style, then ask the same questions of each photographer: hours of coverage, number of photographers, edited photo count, delivery date, backup gear, contract terms and travel. Compare the answers in writing.

How far ahead should I book a wedding photographer in Portugal?

For May to October, as early as you can, since popular Saturdays can fill a year ahead. For an off-season wedding, three to four months is usually enough.

What does the photographer usually deliver, and when?

Ours delivers 400+ or 600+ edited photos depending on the package, in a private online gallery within 6 weeks, with web-resolution images for guests. Ask every photographer for a delivery date in writing.

Is it worth paying for two photographers?

For weddings with two getting-ready locations, a long guest list or a ceremony you want shot from two angles, yes. For a small wedding in one place, one photographer can be enough.

Does the photographer travel to the Douro, Porto or the Algarve?

We cover Lisbon, Sintra, Cascais, Porto, the Douro Valley and the Algarve. Printed albums and travel outside the Lisbon area are add-ons, quoted on request.

Are photos allowed inside Sintra palaces for weddings?

As of October 2026, Parques de Sintra says photography is not allowed inside the monuments and that tripods, external flash and drones are not permitted. Check its image capture page and your venue before planning.
