The best places to propose in Lisbon are Miradouro da Senhora do Monte for the view, Alfama’s quiet lanes for privacy and the Belém riverside for sunset.
This guide to where to propose in Lisbon covers 11 spots we would genuinely consider for a surprise proposal, each with a privacy rating, the best time to go and one practical tip. The ratings are our own judgement, not a measured count, and we say where each outside fact comes from and when we checked it (12 October 2026).
Best view: Miradouro da Senhora do Monte on a weekday. Most privacy: Alfama’s lanes, a quiet garden or a private terrace. Best light: be in position about 45 minutes before sunset, which is around 17:15 in December and 21:00 in June. Photographer sessions start at 30 minutes.
Where to propose in Lisbon: the 11 best spots at a glance
Lisbon is built on hills, so almost every good proposal spot is either a viewpoint (a miradouro) or a stretch of the Tagus riverfront. The list below gives each spot a privacy score from 1 to 5. A 5 means you will probably have the place to yourselves, and a 1 means expect an audience.
How to read the scores. A sunny Saturday changes any of them, so a weekday morning is always the safe bet. If a place matters to you, tell us the date and we will check how busy it is when we scout.

The four miradouros below are all in the hilltop quarters of Graça and Alfama, close enough to compare on a single walk. We rate them on how much room there is to step away from other visitors.
1. Miradouro da Senhora do Monte
Time Out calls it the highest point in Lisbon and one of the less visited viewpoints. Visit Lisboa lists the castle and the Graça church to your left, then the Tagus, the Baixa rooftops and the Carmo ruins.
Best time: a weekday in late afternoon, then stay for the colour in the sky.2. Miradouro da Graça
A wide terrace beside the Graça church, shaded by pine trees, with a café where you can wait before the moment (Visit Lisboa). In our experience it is big enough to find a quiet corner outside peak hours.
Best time: a weekday morning, before the café fills.Wear flat shoes. Both viewpoints sit on steep streets, and the last stretch up to Senhora do Monte is a real climb, so build in a few minutes for your partner to catch their breath before the moment.
3. Miradouro de Santa Luzia
A small terrace with tile panels, a pergola draped in bougainvillea and a view over Alfama’s rooftops and the Tagus (Visit Lisboa). It is the prettiest backdrop in the city for a ring, and also the smallest.
Best time: early on a weekday. Trams 12E and 28E both stop nearby, so it fills up fast later.4. Miradouro das Portas do Sol
A short walk from Santa Luzia, with a statue of São Vicente, outdoor cafés and a higher view over the same rooftops (Visit Lisboa). The cafés and the tram 28 route make it the busiest of the four.

Which riverside spots work for a proposal in Lisbon?
The Tagus gives you open sky and a long horizon, which is why many of the proposals we photograph happen by the water. These three suit different moods.
5. Belém riverside
The promenade by the Tagus in Belém has the 25 de Abril Bridge in the frame behind you and room to find a quiet stretch. The riverside path from Cais do Sodré runs 7.5 km to the Tower, with the Monument to the Discoveries about 1.4 km before it (GreatRuns), and the train from Cais do Sodré takes about seven minutes.
Best time: sunset on a clear evening, or a weekday morning for the fewest visitors.6. Praça do Comércio
A grand riverside square, open to the Tagus on one side and framed by the Rua Augusta Arch on the other (Visit Lisboa). It is one of the biggest squares in Europe, so there is space, but also plenty of company once the day starts.
Best time: early morning, before the square fills up.7. Ponto Final, Cacilhas (Almada)
A waterside restaurant terrace on the south bank, looking back at Lisbon, the 25 de Abril Bridge and Cristo Rei. The ferry from Cais do Sodré takes under 10 minutes and sails every 15 to 20 minutes (Lisbon Portugal Tourism). It is a popular restaurant, so reserve a table in advance.
Best time: sunset on a weekday, with a table booked.Check the route from the ferry before you go. The riverside walkway at Cais do Ginjal, which leads to Ponto Final, was closed for safety reasons in spring 2025 and reopened with wooden walkways at the critical points. If a crowd is your main worry, trade the famous viewpoints for places most visitors walk through without stopping.
8. Alfama’s quiet lanes
Step off the viewpoint trail and the stepped lanes of Alfama, described by Visit Lisboa as the oldest and most traditional neighbourhood in the city, are often empty in the morning. You get cobbles, tiles and rooftops behind you without a queue.
Best time: morning. People live here, so keep voices low.9. Jardim do Príncipe Real
A leafy garden square laid out in the mid-1800s, with benches, a café under the trees and a famous old tree pruned into a parasol shape. It is a gentler, greener alternative to the miradouros.
Best time: a weekday morning, when the benches are free.10. Jardim Botânico da Ajuda
Time Out describes it as the oldest garden in Lisbon, commissioned in 1768, with a view of the Tagus. We have helped plan a proposal here. It charges a small entry fee and listings disagree on opening hours, so check before you go.
Best time: a weekday, after confirming the hours.11. A private rooftop or hotel terrace (privacy 5/5). It is the only option where the crowd question disappears. Ask the hotel or restaurant well ahead and mention that a photographer will be there, and we will plan where to stand.

Golden hour is the prettiest and the busiest. At the same spot, early morning gives you quiet and soft light, while sunset gives you colour and company. Be in position about 45 minutes before sunset, which leaves time for the proposal and for the minutes afterwards, when many of the best pictures happen.
