The best places to propose in Cascais are the cliffs at Boca do Inferno for drama, Guincho beach for a sunset over open water, and the marina or Praia da Rainha when you want something calm and close to the town.
Cascais packs cliffs, a long Atlantic beach, a harbour and a small cove into a few kilometres, and the train from Lisbon takes about 40 minutes. What changes the plan is not the scenery but the wind, the tide and how early the sun sets. Each spot below has a privacy rating (our own judgement, not a measured count), the best time to go and one thing to check first. Sunset times and facts were checked on 12 October 2026.
For drama: Boca do Inferno at golden hour. For a sunset over the sea: Guincho on a calm evening. For calm: Praia da Rainha early in the morning, or the marina below the Citadel. Skip Praia da Ursa: the Sintra municipality advises against going down to it.

1. Boca do Inferno
A chasm in the sea cliffs where the Atlantic crashes against the rock walls below. It is free to visit and about 20 to 30 minutes on foot along the coast from the centre. We pick a quieter corner of the clifftop a few minutes from the main platform, and we keep well back from the edge, because the waves are hard to judge from above.
Best time: golden hour, or early morning for fewer people.2. Guincho beach
A long beach with dunes that faces straight west, so the sun sets into the Atlantic. It is also known as the windiest beach in Portugal, with a strong north wind in summer that tends to build through the day. In summer, go early or on a calm evening.
Best time: the hour before sunset on a calm evening.3. Cabo da Roca
The westernmost point of mainland Europe sits just up the coast, in Sintra municipality. The open-air viewpoints and the lighthouse are the backdrop, and the lighthouse courtyard is a separate €5 visit, open 09:30 to 17:30. Sun can turn to fog or strong wind in minutes, so bring a windproof layer.

Which spots in Cascais town are easiest for a proposal?
These three are within a short walk of the station and the old town, so the logistics are simple and there are cafés close by for the celebration afterwards.
4. Cascais marina and Citadel
The marina has about 650 berths and sits along the Citadel, whose old walls rise immediately above it. The Citadel was turned into a royal summer residence in 1870. The harbour is usually calmer than the open coast, and the restaurants along the marina make an easy next step.
Best time: late afternoon, when the boats catch the warm light.5. Praia da Rainha
A very small cove in the middle of town, tucked between rocks and reached by steps. Local guides describe it as sheltered from the wind. The sand shrinks at high tide and fills up quickly in summer, so check the tide and go early.
Best time: early morning, before the beach fills.6. Santa Marta Lighthouse
A tower covered in white tiles with blue stripes and a red lantern, finished in 1867, on the grounds of the old Santa Marta fort. The sea-facing terrace can be visited for free. The museum inside has its own hours, which published sources do not agree on, so check before you plan around it.
Best time: late afternoon, for soft light on the white tiles.

Is Praia da Ursa a good place to propose?
Praia da Ursa appears on many “hidden beach” lists, and we used to include it. We no longer do. The Sintra municipality advises against going down to the beach and staying there, because the last stretch is a steep cliff path, there is no lifeguard and rescue teams have limited access. A rockfall at the foot of its cliff has also caused a death.
Our advice: do not plan a proposal at Praia da Ursa. If you want a wild, empty feeling, Guincho in the evening or Cabo da Roca on a clear night gives you the same sea and the same sunset with a proper path.
When is the best time to propose in Cascais?
Two things decide it: the season and the time of day. Cascais has good light all year, but the Atlantic wind and the early winter sunsets change the plan.
Long evenings
Sunset reaches about 21:02 by mid-June, so you can go for a late golden hour. Book a weekday and you will find the coast quiet.

Praia da Rainha fills quickly and the summer wind at Guincho builds through the day. Go in the morning, or choose the marina.

Sunset falls around 19:45 in mid-September, an easy time for dinner afterwards. This is our favourite season for the coast.
Best for photosQuiet and moody
Sunset is around 17:36 on 1 November and 17:16 on 30 November. The cliffs are at their most dramatic, and a calmer backup spot is essential.

What if it is windy on the day of the proposal?
On this coast, wind is the most likely thing to change a plan, and it usually has an easy fix.
- Check the forecast two days ahead and the evening before. If the weather is clearly unfavourable we move the session at no extra cost, deciding together the evening before.
- Pick the spot for the wind. On a breezy day move from Guincho or the cliffs to Praia da Rainha or the marina, which are more sheltered.
- Keep a Plan B within ten minutes. A cove or a harbour wall near the first spot means the plan survives a bad hour.
- Dress for the sea, not the beach. A light jacket and secure hair help. Flat shoes help even more on rocks and cliff paths.

How far is Cascais from Lisbon, and can you combine it with Sintra?
Trains to Cascais leave from Cais do Sodré in Lisbon and take about 40 minutes (a few express services in the morning are faster), running roughly every 12 to 20 minutes through the day. Check the current timetable on cp.pt.
Cascais, Sintra and Lisbon are close enough to share one day.
