Yes, if you want drama and accept that it is a public viewpoint. The name means Mouth of Hell: waves push through an open arch in the rock with a loud crash and a lot of spray. The official Cascais tourism listing recommends it for photos and sunsets and says a coastal walkway connects it to the town centre, which is exactly why it suits a surprise: the route looks like ordinary sightseeing.
- What works. Open Atlantic behind you, textured rock and spray in the frame, and an easy walk from the seafront that does not give the game away.
- What does not. Other visitors stand where you want to stand, and nobody can close the viewpoint for you. We pick a quieter corner a few minutes from the busiest platform and photograph from a distance until the signal.
- What changes everything. The sea. Guides agree it is calmer in summer and much rougher in winter storms, and swell and wind decide how close it feels safe to stand.

Sunset on the Cascais coast moves from about 17:16 in mid-December to 21:02 in mid-June, so the same plan needs a different clock each season. Golden hour, the soft light in the last hour or so before sunset, is when we want you in position (definition). The times below are for the 15th of each month in 2026, from sunrise-and-sunset.com.
The clocks change. The EU moves the clocks on the last Sunday of March and October, which in 2026 means 29 March and 25 October. Sunset jumps by about an hour on those dates, so check the exact day rather than the month.
Our rule of thumb is to be at the meeting point about 45 minutes before sunset, walk slowly toward the cliffs, and propose roughly 30 to 40 minutes before the sun touches the horizon. That leaves daylight for the portraits afterwards. In midsummer that means a start around 19:45, which also makes a late dinner easy. In December the whole plan fits between 15:45 and 17:15, so book a table for after dark.
How do you get to Boca do Inferno from Lisbon and Cascais?
The address is Avenida Rei Humberto II de Itália 642, on the western edge of Cascais. There is no ticket and no gate.
- Train to Cascais. Lines run from Cais do Sodré in Lisbon to Cascais in about 40 minutes, with several trains an hour in the daytime. CP has had engineering works on this line during 2026, so check the timetable on cp.pt the day before.
- Walk along the coast. From Cascais station it is about 1.5 to 2 km west, and guides put the walk at 20 to 30 minutes. The route follows the seafront past the marina and the Santa Marta lighthouse, with a coastal walkway and cycle path.
- Bus or taxi. A local bus serves Boca do Inferno from the station area, but published sources disagree on the line number and fare, so check the MobiCascais site or a maps app on the day. A taxi from the station is a short ride.
- Car. There is parking in the area, but on a fine evening it is easier to leave the car in town and make the walk part of the plan.
Our favourite starting point is the Casa de Santa Maria, which sits right beside the lighthouse. From there it is a slow ten to fifteen minute stroll to the cliffs, long enough to settle nerves and short enough that nobody gets tired. Is Boca do Inferno dangerous? Wind, waves and the cliff edge
Take the sea here seriously. Several guides describe the water as very dangerous in winter, and Portuguese maritime police have said that access to the cliff edge is prohibited and the dangers are explained by signs, after a tourist who ignored them fell into the sea. There are viewing platforms and marked paths. We could not confirm a continuous railing along the whole clifftop, so do not assume there is a barrier wherever you stand.
- Stay on the platforms and marked paths. Obey the signs, and never step past them for a better angle.
- Kneel on flat, dry ground well back from the edge. Wet rock and spray make a kneeling proposal near the drop a bad idea, however good it looks.
- Never turn your back on the sea at the edge. Waves arrive in sets, so keep watching the water while you talk.
- Wear shoes with grip. Flat soles, not heels or smooth leather, and a layer that handles wind.
- Keep the ring in a zipped pocket. Open the box once you are standing on stable ground.
Our call on the day. If waves are reaching the platform or spray is heavy, we move to the backup spot rather than push on. If the weather is clearly unfavourable we reschedule at no extra cost, and we decide together the evening before.
