You can do all of this by public transport, which is usually easier than driving because Pena Palace does not allow private vehicles and Sintra’s centre is hard to park in. Trains to Sintra leave from Rossio, Oriente and Entrecampos, and trains to Cascais leave from Cais do Sodré.

Is Sintra a romantic day trip for couples?
Yes, and it is the one that rewards an early start. The park and gardens are at their quietest when they open at 09:00, and the woods above the town stay cool even on warm days. Sintra’s weather can change from sun to mist within minutes, which suits moody photos but means a spare layer.
- Monserrate. The gardens include the Mexican, Japanese and Rose gardens, a fern valley and Beckford’s Waterfall. Park hours are 09:00 to 19:00, and the palace roof is under restoration until early 2027, so expect scaffolding on the building. The official page recommends reaching the park via Colares because of roadworks.
- Pena Palace terraces. The Queen’s Terrace and the Coach House Terrace give wide views. Palace tickets are for a fixed date and time, so book ahead on the official Parques de Sintra page and keep your slot.
- The Moorish Castle walls. Granite ramparts merge with the boulders, and the walk along them gives views over the town, Pena and the Atlantic.
- Sintra town. Narrow lanes and tiled fronts, good for a coffee and a quiet walk after the monuments fill up.

What is the most romantic thing to do in Cascais and at Boca do Inferno?
Cascais is the easiest trip of the three. Step off the train at the terminus, walk down to the bay, and follow the coastal path towards Boca do Inferno, a rock arch where waves crash through and spray up. It is free to visit, a short walk from the centre (allow 20 to 30 minutes at a couple’s pace) and a well-known spot for sunset.
Plan the day backwards from sunset: seafront lunch, a slow walk along the coast, then Boca do Inferno about an hour before the sun goes down. A grey sky is not a problem here, because soft light suits couple photos. Keep well back from the edge when the swell is big.

Is Cabo da Roca worth visiting as a couple?
Cabo da Roca is the westernmost point of mainland Europe, marked by a lighthouse and a stone cross carrying the line “Where the land ends and the sea begins”. It is a short stop rather than a full day, and it is best in the late afternoon when the light turns warm. The courtyard of the lighthouse site is open 09:30 to 17:30, and the lighthouse visit itself is separate and paid.
Wind is the real planning point: weather here can swing to fog or strong wind within the hour, so dress in layers and secure hats and veils. Buses 1253 from Sintra station and 1624 via Cascais stop at the cape, and the lighthouse visitor page lists the hours.

Plan your Cabo da Roca session
Next to the cape is Praia da Ursa, a wild beach reached by a steep trail with a rope on the last part. Guides describe it as slippery in the wet and recommend sturdy shoes, with around 1.5 to 2 hours for the return walk. Go only if you are both comfortable on steep paths, and skip it in wet weather or if you plan a proposal in good clothes.
Can you combine Sintra, Cascais and Cabo da Roca in one day?
You can, but it is a long day with several buses, and the romantic part gets squeezed. If you have only one day, pick two. Sintra and Cabo da Roca work together by bus 1253, and Cascais and Cabo da Roca work together by bus 1624. With two days, give Sintra its own morning.
- Morning in Sintra. Take an early train, reach the park at opening and spend two or three hours in the gardens.
- Midday transfer. Have lunch in town, then take bus 1253 from Sintra station to Cabo da Roca, checking the return times first.
- Late afternoon at the cape. Walk the cliff path while the light softens.
- Evening in Cascais. Take bus 1624 on to Cascais for dinner by the sea, then the train back to Cais do Sodré.

A proposal needs a little more margin than a couple session, because we wait for the right second without hurrying you.

What time of day gives the best light, and how do you keep it private?
Golden light starts roughly an hour before sunset, and the hour after opening is the quietest in the gardens. Sunset moves a lot through the year, so build your day around it. Near Cascais the sun sets at 21:02 on 15 June 2026, and in Sintra at about 17:36 on 1 November and about 17:15 on 1 December.
- Go on a weekday. Day-trip groups peak at weekends and in summer, so a Tuesday in May, June, September or October is usually calmer.
- Be early or late. Reach Sintra at opening, and reach Cabo da Roca after the middle of the day.
- Choose the edges. Terraces and cliff paths away from the main viewpoint give you space; we scout them in advance.
- Keep it small. One planned photo stop is enough, and the rest of the day stays yours.
- Bring a layer. Sintra mist and Cabo da Roca wind change fast, even in summer.
