Best Couples Photoshoot Locations in Lisbon

Alfama, Belém and the viewpoints compared by mood, light and crowds, with the best time of day for each and how to choose for your trip.

Updated October 2026 Written by local photographers Sunset times checked

The best couples photoshoot locations in Lisbon are Alfama for intimate, textured streets, Belém for open, elegant riverside light, and the viewpoints for a wide view of the city.

Each of these couples photoshoot locations in Lisbon gives a different kind of photo and works best at a different hour. Below we explain what the places feel like, when to go, how much walking to expect and how to choose, based on the sessions we shoot across Lisbon.

Quick answer

Pick the mood first. Alfama in the morning for intimate, old-Lisbon photos. Belém around sunset for clean, airy, riverside photos. A viewpoint early or late when you want the city behind you. A session covers up to two people, and the packages are 30 minutes, 1 hour or 1.5 hours.

Where are the best places for a couples photoshoot in Lisbon?

Lisbon has plenty of beautiful places, but a famous spot is not automatically a good one for a session. It can be crowded, windy, or in harsh light at the hour you have free. The best sessions happen when the setting, the time of day and your own energy line up.

Old town

Alfama

Narrow lanes, tiled walls, stairs and warm stone. Photos feel close and personal.

Best for: intimate, natural sessions
Riverside

Belém

Wide promenades, clean architecture and open sky by the Tagus.

Best for: elegant, airy sessions at sunset
Hilltops

Miradouros

Terraces with rooftops and the river behind you, from Santa Luzia to Graça.

Best for: a strong sense of place

If you are still choosing, our comparison of Belém vs Alfama for a photoshoot goes deeper on those two. If you would rather we choose, the booking form has a “Surprise me” option and we plan the route from the light and your hotel.

Tell us your dates and how you want the photos to feel, and we will check the light and suggest a route.

Is Alfama a good place for a couples photoshoot?

Yes, and it is the one we suggest most often to couples who feel awkward in front of a camera. You are never standing still in a wide empty space. You walk through small streets, stop at a corner with a tiled wall or a staircase, and the neighbourhood supplies the texture.

The viewpoint most couples know here is Miradouro de Santa Luzia, which Visit Lisboa describes as having decorative tiles and a view over the church domes to the Tagus. It sits at Largo das Portas do Sol, a short walk from the cathedral, and Carris lists Portas do Sol and Santa Luzia among the stops of trams 28E and 12E.

  • Best for. Romantic, natural sessions, travellers who like old streets, and warm, soft photos with a cinematic feel.
  • Watch the slopes. Streets are steep and cobbled, so comfortable flat shoes matter more here than anywhere else in the city.
  • Go early. The streets are calmer in the morning. Late afternoon also works, but the busiest corners fill up.
  • Keep it compact. One neighbourhood and two or three corners suit a 30 minute or 1 hour session well.

Is Belém good for a couples photoshoot at sunset?

Belém feels like the opposite of Alfama. There are open promenades, refined stonework, the river and plenty of sky, so the photos come out lighter, cleaner and a little more editorial. Movement is easy here, which helps couples who want to walk and talk rather than stop at tight corners.

Because the river opens out here, the light at the end of the day travels along the water and warms the stone. That is why late afternoon is our usual slot, and why this area is also popular for proposals, as you can see in our Belém sunset proposal and a Belém couples session.

  • Best for. Elegant, airy sessions, couples who like architecture and riverside light, and sunset photos.
  • Busy hours. Parts of Belém fill up with visitors in the middle of the day, so we avoid those hours.
  • A different look. Cleaner and more open than Alfama, with less texture and more space around you.

Getting to Belém. From Cais do Sodré, the local train takes about 7 minutes according to a Lisbon transport guide, but timetables differ on weekends and holidays, so check cp.pt for your day. Tram 15E also runs from Praça da Figueira through Praça do Comércio to Belém, stopping at Mosteiro dos Jerónimos and Centro Cultural Belém (Carris), though its page showed a service disruption notice in October 2026.

Which Lisbon viewpoints work best for couples?

A viewpoint gives the strongest sense of place, because the city opens up behind you. The trade-off is that not every miradouro suits a session. Some are packed, some are in flat light at the wrong hour, and some work better for a five minute stop than for a full route.

That is where local scouting helps. We pick the terrace by the hour and the season, then link it to a quieter street nearby so the session is never one crowded spot. Santa Luzia and Portas do Sol are in Alfama and work with the route above. The Graça and Senhora do Monte terraces sit higher and are popular at the end of the day, so they suit a later start.

  • Early or late. Almost every viewpoint looks better and feels calmer at the start or end of the day.
  • Combine, do not repeat. One viewpoint plus one street gives more variety than three terraces in a row.
  • Allow for stairs. Several terraces are reached by steps, so keep shoes and outfits practical.

What time of day is best for couples photos in Lisbon?

Timing changes the result more than the location. The same corner can look soft at 09:30 and harsh at 13:00. Our sessions run daily between 09:00 and 20:00, and the right slot depends on the place.

  • Morning. Best for Alfama and some viewpoints. Streets are calmer, temperatures are kinder and the light is softer.
  • Sunset. Best for Belém and the riverside. Warm tones make the whole session feel more cinematic.
  • Midday. The hardest hour, with strong shadows and heavier foot traffic. It can work in shaded streets, but it is rarely the first choice.

Sunset moves a lot through the year, which changes when a session can end. These are the Lisbon sunset times on the 15th of selected months (sunrise-and-sunset.com, as of October 2026). Golden hour is roughly the hour before them.

15 December 2026Sunset 17:15

15 April 2027Sunset 20:12
15 June 2027Sunset 21:01

In summer, a 20:00 end to our hours means the best light on a late sunset may fall just after the session, so we start a little earlier. In winter the sun sets by about 17:15, so we move the session to the middle of the afternoon. We confirm the exact time with you once the date is set.

How do I choose a location based on our style?

Start with the feeling you want, not the place. Then match it to the setting.

  1. Intimate and emotional? Choose Alfama and a morning or late afternoon slot.
  2. Clean, stylish and open? Choose Belém and aim for the last hour of daylight.
  3. Lisbon clearly visible behind you? Choose a viewpoint, early or late.
  4. A bit of everything? Choose a custom route that links two nearby settings, such as a viewpoint and a street.

Logistics count too. If you have a full day planned, pick a spot near your hotel or the rest of your route. If you are in Lisbon for a short stay, a simple, efficient session beats trying to cover too much ground. For a longer trip, our guide to romantic day trips from Lisbon shows where Sintra and Cascais fit, and if you are travelling from outside the EU, check our Portugal entry requirements first.

What if we are not comfortable in front of a camera?

That is the most common worry, and it is completely normal. Most couples who book are not models. They want the session to feel easy and look like them.

We do not use stiff poses. We give simple directions, choose a route that works with the light and keep a relaxed pace, so you spend most of the time walking, talking and looking at each other. A good route and clear communication matter as much as the camera.

  • Shoes. Wear something you can walk in, especially in Alfama. Our guide to what to wear for a photoshoot in Lisbon has outfit ideas by season.
  • Clothes. Choose outfits that feel like you and avoid very busy patterns.
  • Time. Arrive with a few extra minutes so you start calm, not rushed.
  • Route. Ask for help choosing before the date rather than on the day.
