It is also kind to people who feel awkward in front of a camera. You are never standing in one big open space waiting to be photographed: you walk through small scenes, pause at a viewpoint or a doorway and let the city do part of the work. Tram 28 is the famous way to see Alfama, but the service has been changed and shortened in recent years (Carris announced a shortened 28E in November 2025). Check the Carris website before relying on it, or simply walk up from Baixa.

- Crowds: the Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower and the pastry shops draw many visitors, so timing matters more here if you want the space to feel calm.

Belém is a short ride from the centre, around 10 minutes by the Cascais-line train from Cais do Sodré, so it fits easily around a sightseeing day. Which is better for light and sunset, Belém or Alfama?
Light is the most practical difference between the two. Belém works beautifully near sunset because the open riverside lets the light spread softly and evenly, which gives a bright, smooth, cinematic result. Sunset time changes a lot through the year, so plan the slot around it. These are approximate sunset times for Lisbon around the 21st of each month. Portugal moves the clocks back on the last Sunday of October (25 October 2026), which pulls sunset an hour earlier on the clock.
We usually start 60 to 90 minutes before sunset so that the golden light arrives while we are still working. Sessions are available daily between 09:00 and 20:00, so in winter that already covers sunset. In summer, a late sunset means the best light is near the end of the day, or very early for quieter streets.
Which is better for privacy, crowds and comfort?
It depends on what you mean by privacy. Alfama feels more intimate because the streets are small and enclosed, but small streets are not always empty. Belém has more open space, which feels calmer to the eye, yet some parts are very popular and need better timing.
