Senhora do Monte
Guides describe it as the highest viewpoint in central Lisbon, looking over the castle, the Tagus and the Baixa rooftops. The climb is steep, and sunset is when it fills up.

Torel is a shaded garden terrace above Avenida da Liberdade with a cafe on its lower level, and it is the slowest of the six.
Getting up the hills in 2026. As of October 2026 the Santa Justa Lift and the Glória, Bica and Lavra funiculars are still closed, so São Pedro de Alcântara, Santa Catarina and Torel are reached on foot. The warm light builds in the hour before sunset, and it is worth staying for the blue hour after, when the sky turns pink and the city lights come on. At the sunset terraces, Senhora do Monte and Santa Catarina, arrive 30 to 45 minutes early to get a place at the wall. East-facing Portas do Sol and Santa Luzia are at their best in the morning instead.
How do you get a Lisbon viewpoint to yourselves?
You will rarely have a well-known miradouro completely empty, but you can get close with a few choices.
- Go early. Early morning is the usual advice for a quiet visit. At Senhora do Monte you can even climb before sunrise, if you do not mind the steps.
- Skip sunset at the headline spots. Senhora do Monte, Graça and Santa Catarina fill up on warm evenings. For similar light with less company, try São Pedro de Alcântara or Torel in the late afternoon.
- Choose the smaller terrace. Torel and the Recolhimento garden, which has a gate and is open in daytime only, tend to be calmer than Portas do Sol.
- Go on a weekday. Weekdays are usually quieter than weekends, and the first and last hours of the day are quieter still.
- Respect the neighbours. The streets around Senhora do Monte are residential, so keep voices low and leave the terrace as you found it.
Timing is half of it, and the angle is the other half. A photographer who knows a terrace can shoot towards the view, or from a corner where other visitors stay out of the frame. - Flat, grippy shoes. The calçada cobbles are slippery and nearly every route to a miradouro is uphill.
- Colours that sit well together. Against blue tiles and terracotta roofs, soft neutrals, blues, greens and warm tones read well. Avoid tiny stripes and large logos.
- One layer you can add. It is windier at the top, and the temperature drops quickly after sunset in autumn and winter.
- Fabrics that move. A light dress, scarf or open shirt catches the breeze and adds life to the photos.

- You receive the gallery. Within 7 days you get a private online gallery of professionally edited, full-resolution photos with no watermarks.
Each session covers up to two people, and location scouting is included. Sessions are available daily from 09:00 to 20:00, so for a June evening, when sunset is after 21:00, tell us your dates and we will plan the best light inside those hours.
