Lisbon in September: Weather, Light and What to Do

Lisbon in September means afternoons around 27°C, about four rainy days, a sea of 19 to 20°C and sunsets that slide from 20:05 to 19:20 over the month.
This guide to Lisbon in September is written for trips in September 2027. The weather and sunset figures come from long-term averages and astronomical tables, so they hold for any year. September is one of the best months to visit Lisbon. Expect highs of about 27°C, 38 mm of rain across the whole month, sea at roughly 19°C and sunset between about 20:05 and 19:20. The city is quieter than in July and August but still busy, and a hot afternoon above 30°C is possible, so pack for both.
Is September a good month to visit Lisbon?
For most visitors, yes. The summer peak has passed, terraces are still open late, and the weather is the main reason people pick September over July and August. Rough Guides describes the crowds as thinning through the month, although Lisbon and Porto stay busy.
- Weather. Warm, sunny and mostly dry. The numbers are in the next section.
- Crowds. Lighter than midsummer, but Pena Palace, Belém and the main miradouros still fill up at peak hours, so book timed tickets and go early.
- Light. Sunset moves before 20:00 from about 6 September, which puts golden hour at a comfortable time with dinner still to come.
- Sea. Cooler than the air suggests, around 19 to 20°C, but fine for a swim on a hot afternoon.
- Culture. Film festivals, free heritage openings and concerts restart after the summer break.
What is the weather like in Lisbon in September?
Warm by day, mild at night and very little rain. These are the 1991-2020 averages for Portugal’s national weather service (IPMA) at its Lisbon Instituto Geofísico station.
For comparison, August averages 28.8°C and 5.4 mm of rain, while October averages 22.8°C and 110.6 mm, so September is the last properly dry month. In an average September about 19 days reach 25°C or more and about 6 reach 30°C or more. The record September high is 38.5°C, set in 2016. All figures are in the IPMA climate normal for Lisbon.
Averages hide heat spikes. On 23 September 2026, the first day of autumn, central Lisbon reached 36°C and Euronews (in German) reported tourists caught out with jackets and thick socks. Check the IPMA warnings in the week you fly, and keep long walks for the morning or after 17:00.

What to pack for Lisbon in September
- Light layers. T-shirts for the day and a light jacket or scarf for evenings by the river.
- Sun protection. Hat, sunglasses and sunscreen, especially on Alfama’s open viewpoints.
- Flat, grippy shoes. Calçada (the polished stone paving) gets slippery and the hills are steep.
- Swimwear and a towel if you plan to head to Cascais or Costa da Caparica.

Sunset and golden hour in Lisbon in September 2027
Days are still long at the start of the month and lose about 70 minutes of daylight by the 30th. These times are from sunrise-and-sunset.com for Lisbon, in local summer time, which runs until the clocks go back on 31 October 2027.
Our rule of thumb for a one-hour session is to start 75 to 90 minutes before sunset so you finish in the warm light. That means roughly 18:35 at the beginning of the month, 18:15 in the middle and 17:50 at the end. A practical note for planning your walking: as of October 2026 the Santa Justa Lift and the Glória, Bica and Lavra funiculars were closed (RFM), with no confirmed reopening dates. Check their status before you build a route around them.

Things to do in Lisbon in September
September weather suits the outdoor classics. Do the climbs and the long walks in the morning, then keep the late afternoon for viewpoints and a table outside.
- Chase sunset from a miradouro. Senhora do Monte, Santa Catarina and Portas do Sol are the classics, covered in our viewpoints guide.

Beaches near Lisbon in September
Cascais and Estoril are the easiest beach day: the train from Cais do Sodré takes about 40 minutes according to Lisbon Tourism, with trains every 12 to 20 minutes depending on the time of day. Praia da Rainha is a small beach right in Cascais, and Guincho, a few kilometres west, is wide and exposed to the wind. Costa da Caparica sits across the river and is the longest sandy stretch.

Is Sintra worth a day trip in September?
Yes, and it is one of the better months for it. Rough Guides lists May-June and September-October as the best months, with summer bringing long queues at Pena and on bus 434. The train from Rossio takes about 40 minutes, and the day-trip basics are in our guide to day trips from Lisbon.
