The best fado houses in Lisbon are small dinner rooms in Alfama, Bairro Alto and Lapa where a live fado set is part of the meal, and most of them need a table booked in advance.
To find the best fado houses in Lisbon, we checked each of the ten below against its own website and the city’s tourism listings in October 2026, and we dropped places whose current hours or format we could not confirm. For a first fado night, book dinner at Clube de Fado or Adega Machado. Both are open daily, with fado from about 20:30. For something looser and cheaper, queue early at Tasca do Chico, which takes no reservations. A Severa is closed on Wednesdays, O Faia and Sr. Vinho on Sundays and Parreirinha de Alfama on Mondays. Confirm the day before you go.
What is a fado house, and what happens on a fado night?
Fado is Lisbon’s urban song of longing, sung by one voice with a Portuguese guitar, and UNESCO has listed it as intangible cultural heritage since 2011 (UNESCO). A fado house, or casa de fados, is a restaurant built around that music. You eat, and between courses the lights drop and a singer takes the floor.
Most houses do not sell a separate ticket. Clube de Fado and Café Luso say on their own sites that the fado is part of the dinner, so the menu price already includes the show. The evening usually follows the same pattern.
- Doors and kitchen open. Between 19:00 and 19:30 at the houses that publish a time, so the room starts to fill before the music.
- First fado set. About 20:15 to 20:30 at Café Luso, Clube de Fado and Adega Machado. Tables are served in courses, with the singing between them.
- Sets with breaks. Fado comes in sets, with pauses in between so the kitchen can serve the next course.
- Closing. The houses close at 01:00 or 02:00, so by the end of the night the metro has usually stopped and you will want a taxi.

Best fado houses in Alfama
Alfama is the easiest place to start. The houses are close together, and the lanes are steep and cobbled, so wear flat shoes.
- Clube de Fado. Rua de São João da Praça 94, steps from the Cathedral. Open every day, kitchen from 19:30, fado from 20:30, closing at 01:00. Its site lists a dinner menu at 78 EUR per person with the show included, and warns that the small room fills early (as of October 2026). Best for: a special-occasion dinner.
- Parreirinha de Alfama. Beco do Espírito Santo 1. Visit Lisboa lists Tuesday to Sunday from 20:00 to 01:00 and Monday closed. Its own site shows a set menu with the show at 68 EUR per person. Best for: an old-school, intimate evening.
- Casa de Linhares. Beco dos Armazéns do Linho 2, in the remains of a Renaissance building. Its contact page says it opens every day from 20:00 to 02:00 and advises reserving. The site gives no menu or price, so ask when you book whether you can order à la carte. Best for: a dramatic setting.
- Mesa de Frades. Rua dos Remédios 139, in an 18th-century chapel. Visit Lisboa lists Monday to Saturday from 18:30 to 02:00. Its site sells a fixed-price set dinner, with or without drinks, and a 20% payment secures the table. Best for: a fixed-price night with no surprises.
Best fado houses in Bairro Alto and Lapa
Bairro Alto has the most history under one roof, and Lapa is the calm, residential option. Both fit well with an earlier walk, as we explain further down.
- A Severa. Rua das Gáveas 51 to 61. Its site says it opened in 1955. Open every day except Wednesdays, 20:00 to 02:00, with dinner from 20:00 to 23:00. Guests aged 12 and over pay a minimum of 55 EUR with the show included, and reservations close at 19:00 on the day (as of October 2026). Best for: history and a classic feel.
- O Faia. Rua da Barroca 54 to 56. Open Monday to Saturday, 19:30 to 01:00, closed Sundays. The site offers dinner with the show or snacks with the show, and says tables are assigned in the order of booking. Best for: a polished first fado night.
- Adega Machado. Rua do Norte 91. Open every day, doors at 19:00, fado at 20:30, closing at 01:00. It opened in 1937 and says its few tables fill early. Best for: a reliable dinner and show.
- Café Luso. Travessa da Queimada 10, in the former cellars and stables of a palace. Open every day, kitchen at 19:00, fado from 20:15, closing at 01:00. A single set menu at 65 EUR per person includes the show, and groups over ten must contact the house directly. Best for: a grand, vaulted room.
- Tasca do Chico. Rua do Diário de Notícias 39. Informal fado vadio, with snacks and drinks and no menu obligation. Euronews (June 2026) says it takes no reservations, sets a small minimum spend and has a queue from about 18:30, with music from about 20:30. Best for: a loose, local-feeling night.
- Sr. Vinho. Rua do Meio à Lapa 18. Its site says it is open Monday to Saturday from 19:30, so it is closed on Sundays, with fado from about 20:00, and it takes reservations by message. Best for: a quieter evening away from the busy lanes.
We left out Tasca do Jaime in Graça, because the only listing we found was several years old and we could not confirm its current fado days. Our older version of this guide also mentioned a second Tasca do Chico in Alfama, which came out for the same reason.

Dinner is the normal route. At most houses the fado is part of the meal and the price covers both. If you want less commitment, there are three options.
- Snacks and the show. O Faia lists a snacks-and-show option next to its dinner menu, so you do not have to eat a full meal.
- Walk in for drinks. Tasca do Chico serves snacks and drinks with no menu obligation, though a minimum spend applies and entry is first come, first served.
- Learn first, hear later. The Museu do Fado in Alfama is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00, with last entry at 17:30, and is closed on Mondays. It is a good daytime warm-up before the dinner.
Book as early as you can. Weekends and the high season are the likeliest to fill up, as general advice. The houses with their own booking pages are the safest way to book, and they avoid resellers who add a markup. Fado is sung for a quiet room, and silence is part of the music.
- Stop talking when the singer starts. Whispering at the table is noticeable in rooms this small. Wait for the pause between songs.
- Keep your phone away. As general advice, do not film or use flash during a performance, and ask the staff before you take any photos at all.
- Be on time. Arriving after the first set starts is disruptive and can cost you your table. Aim for the doors-open time.
- Dress smart-casual. None of the sites we read states a dress code, but flat shoes help on Alfama’s cobbles.
Tourist-trap warning signs to watch for
This is our own judgement, not a ranking. Fado is popular, so a few places trade on the name.
- Someone calls you in from the street. In our experience, a good house does not need to.
- No clear price. A good house says what the menu costs and that the show is included. If nobody can tell you, ask before you sit down.
- Recorded music or a screen. Fado is live, a singer with a Portuguese guitar.
Can you combine a fado dinner with a photoshoot in Lisbon?
Yes, with a plan, and we will be honest about the light. Our sessions run daily from 09:00 to 20:00, and fado dinners start around 19:30 to 20:30, so the two fit together easily. What changes is the sunset.
According to Gaisma’s sun tables, as of October 2026, the sun sets at about 17:20 in November and December, about 18:20 in February and about 19:30 in September. From April to August it sets after 20:15, when our sessions have ended. That means a golden-hour or blue-hour session before dinner works best from autumn to early spring. In summer we shoot in the softest light we can fit before 20:00, and you go to dinner afterwards.

Planning the rest of the night in Lisbon
After the last set you can carry on to a bar or head back to the hotel. The metro closes at about 01:00 and reopens at 06:30 (Metro de Lisboa, as of October 2026), so after a late show use a taxi or ride-hail.
