Christmas Lights in Lisbon: Where to See Them and When to Go

Where the lights are, what the 2025 season looked like, how Lisbon’s early sunset shapes your evening and when to book a festive photo session.

Updated October 2026 2026 dates not announced yet Sunset times for December

The Christmas lights in Lisbon go on in late November, and the best time to see them is the half hour after sunset, when the lights are on and the sky is still blue.

This guide to the Christmas lights in Lisbon shows where the main displays are, what we know about the dates (the 2026 programme is not out yet, so we label 2025 clearly), which markets to pair with an evening walk and how to time a photo session around a sunset that arrives before 5:30 pm in December. We checked every date and time in October 2026 and name the source next to it.

Quick answer

The 2026 switch-on date has not been announced yet. In 2025 the lights came on at Praça do Comércio on Saturday 22 November and were lit every evening from 17:30, across 46 locations. Be on Rua Augusta or at the Praça do Comércio tree between 5:30 and 5:50 pm in December: the lights are on and the sky still has colour.

When do the Christmas lights in Lisbon go on in 2026?

As of mid-October 2026 the city has not published the dates. Discover Portugal’s Christmas guide still lists the switch-on at Praça do Comércio as to be confirmed. What we can give you is last year’s pattern, and it is a reasonable guide for the weeks ahead.

In 2025 the official switch-on was on Saturday 22 November at 18:30 at Terreiro do Paço, next to a 30-metre tree, with a light and orchestra show and a concert by fado singer Sara Correia. It was organised by Lisbon City Council with the commerce and services association, as announced by EGEAC, the city’s culture company. Expect a Saturday in late November again, and confirm it on Visit Lisboa a few weeks before you travel.

In 2025 the lights were on from 17:30 to 23:00 from Sunday to Thursday and until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays, according to Time Out Lisboa. We could not find an official switch-off date for the 2025-26 season, so if you travel in early January, check before you plan an evening around them.

Tell us your dates and we will check the sunset, the lights schedule and a quiet route through Baixa and Chiado for your evening.

Where to see the Christmas lights in Lisbon

Most of the best displays sit within walking distance of each other in Baixa and Chiado, so a single evening covers them. The streets below are the ones named for the 2025 season, according to Lisboa Secreta and Time Out Lisboa. Designs change from year to year, so treat them as the likely core and not a promise.

Baixa

Praça do Comércio

The 30-metre tree stands in Terreiro do Paço with the Tagus open behind it, which makes it the easiest place to photograph the lights against the sky. The season opens here.

Baixa

Rua Augusta and Rua do Ouro

Rua Augusta carried trees and clouds of light in 2025 and ends at the Rua Augusta Arch. Rua do Ouro had twinkling stars overhead.

Busy, and worth it
Chiado

Rua Garrett, Rua do Carmo and Praça Luís de Camões

Golden light clouds on Rua Garrett, a tunnel of light arches on Rua do Carmo and a large installation in Camões square.

Discover Portugal also lists Avenida da Liberdade and the Armazéns do Chiado among the places with lights. We did not find the 2025 design for the avenue, so look at it on the way to or from the market at Parque Eduardo VII rather than building the evening around it.

  1. Praça do Comércio at sunset. Photograph the tree and the river while the sky is still light.
  2. Rua Augusta towards the arch. Walk it before 6:30 pm if you can, because it fills up as the evening goes on.
  3. Rua do Ouro or Rua do Carmo to Rossio. Both lead you up to the square and the market.
  4. Chiado and Praça Luís de Camões. End with a hot chocolate and the last of the lights.

Are there Christmas markets and ice rinks in Lisbon?

Yes, two are worth planning around, and both are free to enter. The 2026 dates for Wonderland are still to be announced, and the Rossio dates below come from a listing that is not an official city announcement, so confirm both before you go.

Market and rink

Wonderland Lisboa

Set up in Parque Eduardo VII, with a Ferris wheel and an ice rink. The 2025 edition ran from 28 November to 4 January, and entry was free, with a charge for rides and skating. Take the Blue Line to Parque station.

Market

Rossio Christmas market

A smaller market in the middle of the Baixa, handy for adding to the lights walk. Discover Portugal lists 13 November to 21 December, with free entry.

Two practical points from the same guide: most museums, sights and shops close on Christmas Day, and trams and the metro run less often over the holidays. Our guide to getting around Lisbon explains how the trams and metro work.

  • Castanhas assadas. Roasted chestnuts are a winter street food in Lisbon, sold in paper cones. Vendors set up around Rossio, Rua Augusta, Praça da Figueira and Largo de Camões, per Taste of Lisboa.
  • Bolo-rei. The crown-shaped king cake with candied fruit is eaten from early December until 6 January, and the pastelarias on the way are full of it.
  • Something hot. A hot chocolate in a Chiado cafe gives you a warm-up between the streets and the square.

Plan your evening

What time is best to photograph the Christmas lights in Lisbon?

Between about 5:30 and 5:50 pm. In 2025 the lights switched on at 17:30, and in December the sun sets between about 5:15 and 5:25 pm. That leaves a short window where the lights are on and the sky is deep blue instead of black. Once the sky goes dark, the lights stay bright but the picture loses depth, and the crowds in Baixa are at their largest.

Our own timing advice: for a one-hour session, start about 45 minutes before sunset, around 4:30 pm. You get the soft golden light first, the colour in the sky next, and the lights themselves at the end.

Can you book a Christmas lights photo session in Lisbon?

Yes. We run sessions every day from 09:00 to 20:00, and in December we plan the route by sunset: golden light on the river or in the old streets first, then Baixa and Chiado as the lights come on. If the weather is clearly unfavourable, we reschedule at no extra cost and decide together the evening before.

How to photograph the Christmas lights in Lisbon yourself

Lights are easy to enjoy and tricky to photograph. These are the habits that make the biggest difference, whether you use a phone or a camera.

  • Go on a weekday. Rua Augusta and the Rossio area are usually busiest on Friday and Saturday evenings, when the lights also stay on longer.
  • Use night mode and keep still. Brace your elbows against your body, tap on the face to set focus, then lower the exposure a little so the lights do not wash out.
  • Stand a few steps away from the lights. With the lights behind your subject, they turn into soft glowing dots instead of a bright wall.
  • Watch the cobbles. Wet stone gives lovely reflections, and it is also slippery, so wear shoes with grip.
  • Wear warm colours. Red, cream, navy and forest green stand out against the gold of the lights. See our guide on what to wear for a photoshoot in Lisbon in every season.

How do you plan a Christmas trip around the lights?

Book the evening of the lights first and fit the rest of the day around it. Baixa and Chiado are the most convenient places to stay for a lights walk, and our guide to where to stay in Lisbon compares the neighbourhoods.

  • Documents. Check your passport and entry rules well ahead. Our Portugal entry requirements checklist covers it.
  • Opening times. Most sights and shops close on Christmas Day, so plan food and transport for 25 December in advance.
  • Daylight. The days are short, so keep museums and viewpoints for the morning and the early afternoon, and the lights for after 5:30 pm.
  • More ideas. Our 3-day Lisbon itinerary and the list of top photo spots in Lisbon help fill the daytime.

If you prefer a quieter spot, ask us for a route that avoids the busiest street, and we will build it around your date and the light. One evening, one route, one gallery you can open before you fly home.
