Best Places to Get Married in Portugal
Six regions compared for look, light and weather, with climate normals, sunset times and the drawback of each place stated plainly.
The best places to get married in Portugal are Sintra for palaces and forest, Lisbon and Cascais for city and coast, Porto and the Douro for river and vineyards, the Algarve for cliffs, and Comporta for open land: choose the look first, then the month.
We are photographers, not wedding planners or lawyers, so this is a general overview of the best places to get married in Portugal and not legal advice. Climate figures are IPMA 1991-2020 normals, sunsets come from sunrise-and-sunset.com tables for 2027, and venue rules come from official pages, all checked in October 2026. The paperwork has its own guide, getting married in Portugal as a foreigner.
Pick the region for its look and the month for its weather. May and September give average highs of 20 to 27 C in Lisbon, Porto and Faro, and September has fewer rain days than May in all three. July and August are dry but push the Alentejo above 33 C, and Porto sees 10 to 13 rain days a month from October to February.
Which region is best for a wedding in Portugal?
No region wins on every count, because each trades something for what it gives. Best months below are our reading of the climate figures further down, except for Sintra and Comporta, where they follow Rough Guides.
Is Sintra a good place to get married?
Yes, if you accept the crowds. Sintra, about 40 minutes from Lisbon by train according to Rough Guides, gives you palaces and forest, with the Atlantic cliffs of Cabo da Roca nearby. Parques de Sintra lists ceremony venues at Pena and Monserrate, and our guide to eloping in Sintra covers them and the legal routes.
- Weather swings. Rough Guides says it can flip from sun to mist in minutes, so plan a layer.
- Crowds. The same guide calls summer packed, which is why May to June and September to October suit a ceremony better.
- Photo rules. The Parques de Sintra regime for wedding sessions covers six people, bans tripods, external flash, reflectors, drones and photography inside the monuments, and is paid at the ticket office.
- Closing times. The Pena and Monserrate parks open from 09:00 to 19:00, so summer sunsets fall after closing and Cabo da Roca takes over the evening.
- Works at Monserrate. The official page says roof restoration runs until the first quarter of 2027, with scaffolding on the palace.
Cabo da Roca belongs to the same area and is much cooler than the city: its July average high is 20.9 C against 28.3 C at Lisbon, according to IPMA. Our where to propose in Sintra guide shows the viewpoints we use.
Lisbon or Cascais: which is better for a wedding?
Both are close to the airport, so the choice comes down to city or sea. Lisbon is stone, tile and river. Cascais and Estoril are rock, sand and Atlantic light.
Lisbon
Tiled facades, viewpoints and the Tagus at golden hour. The registry service names the Lisbon city council as one of two municipal venues for civil ceremonies. Hills and cobbles are hard in heels.
Best for: a city wedding with easy guest travelCascais and Estoril
Seafront forts and rocky coves. Guincho, about 5 km from Cascais, is a windsurfing beach where strong northerly winds dominate from June to August, according to Wikipedia, which matters for veils and hair.
Best for: sunset portraits and a relaxed coastal dayWe found no published wedding photo regime for the big Belém monuments, so ask the managing body before planning anything there. For the open-air settings, our Lisbon couples locations guide and Cascais and Estoril photographer page show where we shoot.
Porto or the Douro Valley: where should you marry in the north?
Porto is the compact choice: the Ribeira, the Dom Luís I bridge and the river light, with a photographer on our team who lives in the city. Our Porto photo spots guide and Porto photographer page cover the places we use.
Porto
Sunset falls at 21:07 on 15 June 2027. Porto is also the wettest city here: IPMA records 1,146.9 mm a year at Pedras Rubras against 722.5 mm in Lisbon, with 10 to 13 rain days a month from October to February.
Best for: a river-city wedding from May to SeptemberDouro Valley
Wikipedia notes that UNESCO inscribed the Alto Douro Wine Region in 2001, and that its climate is continental, with hot dry summers and cold winters. Vila Real, the nearest IPMA normals we could open, averages 28.8 C in July with 13.5 days at 30 C or more, though the station sits at 561 m.
Best for: a vineyard estate wedding where guests stay on siteRules for sound and photography differ from one quinta to the next, so ask each estate, and ask whether harvest weeks affect your date.
Algarve, Comporta or Alentejo: what about the south?
The south offers the most warmth and space, and its three places differ more than the map suggests.
Algarve
Ponta da Piedade near Lagos has golden rocks up to 20 m high, per Wikipedia. Faro averages under one rain day a month from June to August, but its July high is 29.4 C. The registry service names the Albufeira council as one municipal venue.
Best for: a cliff or beach ceremony in May, June, September or OctoberComporta
About 90 minutes south of Lisbon by road, with rice paddies, pine forest and the Sado estuary, per Rough Guides. It has no train station and the beach has little shade. Alcácer do Sal, the nearest IPMA station we found, averages 32.1 C in July.
Best for: small weddings where guests have carsAlentejo
Évora averages 30.2 C in June, 33.3 C in July and 33.5 C in August, with 15 to 25 days a month at 30 C or above in those three months.
Best for: April, May or early October
What is the best month to get married in Portugal?
Late spring and early autumn. The same month can mean very different days, as these July averages from IPMA station sheets show.
Next, the average high and the days with 1 mm of rain or more, from IPMA 1991-2020 normals for Lisbon, Porto and Faro.
Our reading: May, June and September balance warmth and rain. July and August are driest but hottest inland, Porto stays cooler all summer, and October is mild with more rain days.
Sunset sets the ceremony time. The times below are for the 15th of each month in 2027, in local clock time, from sunrise-and-sunset.com. Our rule of thumb is a ceremony about two hours before sunset, which leaves golden light for portraits. Our sunset tables cover more months.
Tell us your date and region and we will say what is realistic for the light, the venue and the wind.
Ask about your weddingHow do you plan guests, travel and photography across regions?
The region you choose changes the logistics more than the pictures. This is the order we suggest.
- Fix the legal route first. A Portuguese authorisation lasts six months, so line the date up with your season before booking anything else.
- Check how guests arrive. Sintra has a train from Lisbon, Comporta has no station, and the Douro and the Algarve usually mean a car or a coach.
- Ask each venue about photography. Parques de Sintra has a written regime, we found none for the Belém monuments, and quintas set their own rules.
- Match the time to the sunset. Work backwards from the tables above and keep a window for portraits.
We cover full-day weddings across Lisbon, Sintra, Cascais, Porto, the Douro Valley and the Algarve, and the wedding page also lists Comporta and the Alentejo. The main package has two photographers, backup equipment is always on hand, everything is in English, and travel outside the Lisbon area is an add-on. Our guide to choosing a wedding photographer in Portugal lists what to ask before you book, and Portugal entry requirements covers travel documents.
