Day After Wedding Photo Session in Portugal

When to book a relaxed portrait session the day after your wedding (or a day before it), where to hold it in Lisbon, Sintra, Cascais or Porto, and how to cope with cobbles and wind.

Updated October 2026 Sunset times checked Written by local photographers

A day after wedding photo session in Portugal is a short, unhurried portrait outing the evening after your wedding, and a pre-wedding session does the same job a day or two before.

Couples who look for a day after wedding photo session Portugal can offer usually want one thing the wedding day rarely gives: time. There is no schedule, no guests waiting for drinks and you choose the light. Below we cover when to book it, where to go in Lisbon, Sintra, Cascais and Porto, how to manage a dress, hair and shoes on cobbles and in wind, and how to add it to a wedding quote or book a private session instead. Sunset times and Sintra rules were checked in October 2026.

Quick answer

Book it for the evening after the wedding, or a day or two before, and start about 90 minutes before sunset. Wear flat shoes for the walking, expect wind on the coast and keep to open-air spots in Sintra. Ask for it inside a wedding quote, or book a private session on the booking page, where the current prices are.

What is a day-after or pre-wedding photo session?

It is a portrait session separate from the wedding coverage, shot where you choose and with just the two of you. Our wedding page says many couples add a relaxed session the day after at a scenic spot. A pre-wedding session works the same way, a day or two earlier, in an outfit of your choice.

  • No timeline. On the wedding day the ceremony, family photos and dinner set the clock. Here the light sets it.
  • Better light. A ceremony at 16:00 in summer leaves you with harsh portrait light. A session can be placed in the last hour of the evening or the first of the morning.
  • Less pressure. No guests and no schedule means time to walk, laugh and repeat a pose until it feels right.
  • It works if you marry elsewhere. Some couples sign the legal papers at home and use Portugal for the vows and portraits. Our Sintra elopement guide explains that route.

Should you book it before the wedding or the day after?

Both work, and the right one depends on your flights and your nerves. Here is how the three options compare.

Before

Pre-wedding session

You meet your photographer in person and try your hair and outfit in real wind and light. It also gives you pictures for a welcome sign or a save-the-date, if you want those.

Best if you want to feel at ease on the day
After

Day-after session

The outfits are already worn once and nobody is watching the clock. The catch is tired faces after a long night and flights home that may be close.

Best for relaxed energy and the full outfits
Either

Private session on its own

Already married at a registry or at home? A standard private session works the same way, from 30 minutes to 1.5 hours.

Best if you are not booking wedding coverage

A spare day matters more than the session itself. For private sessions the booking page says that if the weather is clearly unfavourable the session is rescheduled at no extra cost, decided together the evening before. That only helps if you are still in the country, so avoid the morning of your flight.

If you fly out straight after the wedding, choose the pre-wedding option. Travelling from outside the EU? Check your documents in our Portugal entry requirements guide before you plan dates.

Where should you hold a day-after session in Lisbon, Sintra, Cascais or Porto?

Choose by how far you can comfortably walk in your outfit, not by the postcard. A long dress asks for wide, flat paths, while a suit can handle the steps.

Lisbon

Belém or Alfama

Belém and the Tagus riverside have wide promenades with the 25 de Abril Bridge, which suits a long dress. Alfama’s miradouros give rooftop views but come with steps and worn stones.

Easiest in a dress: Belém
Sintra and Cascais

Gardens, Cabo da Roca and the coast

Sintra’s gardens, viewpoints and streets are free to shoot in. Cabo da Roca and the Cascais rocks give open sea light but strong wind.

Best light, most wind
Porto

Ribeira, the Douro and Dom Luís I Bridge

The quay with its rabelo boats and the bridge work well at sunset, and riverside viewpoints add height. Our Porto sessions are shot by a photographer who lives in Porto.

For more Lisbon ideas see our couples locations guide and the comparison of Belém and Alfama. Our Sintra photographer page and Porto photographer page show how the private sessions run in each place.

What time of day is best, and when does the sun set?

Our rule of thumb is to start about 90 minutes before sunset. That puts the warm light in the middle of the session and leaves the soft glow after the sun drops for the last frames. The times below are for the 15th of each month in 2027, taken from sunrise-and-sunset.com for Lisbon, as of October 2026.

15 April, LisbonSunset 20:12, start around 18:40
15 May, LisbonSunset 20:40, start around 19:10
15 June, LisbonSunset 21:01, start around 19:30
15 September, LisbonSunset 19:44, start around 18:15
15 October, LisbonSunset 18:57, start around 17:30

Porto is within about six minutes of Lisbon on the dates we checked: sunset is 20:44 on 15 May, 21:07 on 15 June and 19:43 on 15 September, per the Porto pages of the same site. If you prefer mornings, Sintra suits them, and the Pena and Monserrate parks open at 09:00. For more light data see our season and sunset guide.

Clocks go back on the last Sunday of October (31 October 2027, per the Royal Observatory of Belgium’s summer-time page). In Lisbon, sunset moves from 18:38 on 30 October to 17:36 on 31 October, so a late-October wedding needs an earlier start.

How do you cope with a dress, hair and shoes on cobbles and in wind?

Plan for two things: stone paving and sea wind. Portugal Visitor notes that calçada pavements can be slippery when wet and are a nightmare in heels. On the coast, wind is the bigger issue, since Cabo da Roca’s cliffs rise more than 100 metres and summer is the windiest season there.

  1. Walk in flat shoes. Carry your heels and put them on at the spot, or skip them altogether. Stones with gaps and hills are hard on a heel.
  2. Check the hem and the fabric. Ask your dressmaker about a bustle or a loop to lift the hem on steps. Light fabrics catch wind, so a heavier skirt or a helper to hold the veil makes a difference.
  3. Pin for wind. Ask your hairdresser for a style that survives a sea breeze, with extra pins and a strong-hold spray. A loose style can look good in wind, but it will not look the same as at the ceremony.
  4. Pack a small kit. Flat shoes, a brush, pins, a shawl, water and tissues. Keep well back from cliff edges, because the ground can be unstable and the wind strong.

If the cobbles are wet, we move to wide promenades or garden paths rather than steep old-town lanes. The weather is decided together the evening before, so tell us how much you are willing to walk.

Can you take wedding photos in Sintra’s palaces and parks?

Gardens, viewpoints and streets in Sintra are free to shoot in. Inside the monuments each site has its own rules, and professional photography may need prior authorisation. Parques de Sintra publishes a regime for wedding sessions on its image capture page. This is what it says as of October 2026.

  • A fee, paid in person. A heritage image fee is paid at the monument’s ticket office during opening hours. It cannot be paid in advance, and exclusive sessions and out-of-hours access are not offered.
  • Six people. The fee covers up to six people, models and photographer included. Extra guests need garden tickets.
  • Outside only, no extras. Photography is not allowed inside the monuments. Tripods, external flash, reflectors and drones are not permitted.
  • Commercial or public use needs authorisation. The page says any public use of the images for commercial purposes requires prior authorisation from Parques de Sintra. Its separate exceptional-capture policy asks for requests at least 15 working days ahead, so ask early if you want to publish the pictures.
  • Opening hours. The Pena and Monserrate parks open from 09:00 to 19:00, with last admission at 18:00.

These rules cover the Parques de Sintra sites. We did not find a published wedding regime for the open-air Cabo da Roca, so we plan around free outdoor spots and check what each operator allows before the date. For hotels, quintas and other private grounds, ask the venue what it allows. More detail is in our Sintra elopement guide.

Ask about your wedding

How do you add a day-after session to a wedding, or book one on its own?

There are two routes. If you are booking our wedding coverage, ask for the session when you enquire and we will build it into your quote. As a guide, the wedding packages are One Photographer from €1500, Two Photographers from €2200 (the most chosen) and Photo + Video from €3400. Final pricing depends on date, location and coverage. All include a private online gallery, delivery within 6 weeks and a pre-wedding planning call. Printed albums and travel outside the Lisbon area are add-ons.

The second route is a private session from the booking page, which suits couples who married at home or who only want portraits. These are the three durations.

30 minup to 25 edited photos
1 hourup to 40 edited photos
1.5 hours60+ edited photos

Every private session includes professional editing, a private online gallery within 7 days, full-resolution files with no watermarks and location scouting. A session covers up to 2 people and more can join, up to 10 in total. Current prices are on the booking page, and we are available daily from 09:00 to 20:00.

  1. Fix the wedding date and place first. Everything else hangs on that. Our guide to getting married in Portugal as a foreigner covers the paperwork.
  2. Decide before or after, and keep a spare day. A buffer lets us move the session if the weather turns.
  3. Send the request. Ask for it in your wedding enquiry, or choose a session, location and date on the booking page.
  4. Confirm the details. Wedding enquiries are answered by a person, usually within 24 hours. Private sessions are confirmed on WhatsApp.

Our wedding page notes that there is no residency requirement to marry in Portugal and that this includes same-sex couples. Common questions

Can you have a photo session the day after a wedding in Portugal?

Yes. Our wedding page says many couples add a relaxed session the day after at a scenic spot, and extras can be built into a wedding quote. You can also book a private session on its own.

Is it better to do pre-wedding photos or day-after photos?

Choose the day after if your outfits are ready and you can stay another day. Choose pre-wedding if you fly out straight after the wedding or want to feel at ease with the photographer first.

What time should we start a day-after session?

Start about 90 minutes before sunset. In Lisbon on 15 September 2027 that is around 18:15, with sunset at 19:44, per sunrise-and-sunset.com. The table above has the other months.

Can we wear our wedding dress and suit again?

Yes, and many couples do. Wear flat shoes for the walking, pick wide paths if the dress is long and plan for wind on the coast.

Do we need permission to photograph in Sintra?

Gardens, viewpoints and streets are free to shoot in. Inside Parques de Sintra monuments, photography is not allowed, and a wedding-session fee and rules apply in the parks, so check the Parques de Sintra page.

Is a day-after session included in the wedding packages?

The wedding page does not list it as included. Ask for it when you enquire and we will add it to your quote.
