First Night in Lisbon: What to Do & Where to Go

Your first night in Lisbon only happens once. Do it right and the city will stay with you for the rest of your life. Here’s exactly where to go — from a local’s perspective.

Your first night in Lisbon sets the tone for everything that follows. In fact, how you spend those first few hours — exhausted from travel or not — often determines whether you fall instantly in love with the city or need a day or two to warm up. However, if you follow this guide, we can almost guarantee it will be the former.

As someone who photographs Lisbon every week, I’ve seen thousands of tourists arrive and head straight to the most obvious spots. Therefore, this guide is different — it’s built around what a local would actually do, not what the guidebooks say.

Your First Night in Lisbon, Step by Step

01 First 30 Minutes
Drop Your Bags — Then Walk Toward the River

First of all, resist the urge to immediately go sightseeing. Check in, freshen up, and then head downhill toward the Tagus. The river is Lisbon’s anchor — and seeing it for the first time on foot, rather than from a taxi window, is a completely different experience.

Specifically, aim for Cais do Sodré or Ribeira das Naus. Walk along the waterfront, let the scale of it sink in, and breathe the salt air. This is your introduction to Lisbon.

02 Early Evening
Go Up Before the Sun Goes Down

Consequently, one of the most important things you can do on your first night in Lisbon is reach a viewpoint — a miradouro — before sunset. The city looks completely different from above, and the golden light that hits at around 7–8pm (depending on the season) is unlike anything you’ve seen before.

For first-timers, Miradouro das Portas do Sol in Alfama is ideal. It’s accessible, spectacular, and gives you an immediate sense of the city’s geography. Alternatively, Miradouro de Santa Catarina has a more bohemian, local atmosphere with street musicians and a relaxed crowd.

Have Your First Drink at the Right Place

Once you’ve taken in the views, moreover, it’s time for a drink. However, skip the obvious tourist bars on the main squares — instead, find a small tasca or wine bar in one of the side streets of Bairro Alto or Príncipe Real. A glass of Vinho Verde or a Sagres Super Bock costs €2–3 and tastes better in a tiled, century-old room than anywhere else on earth.

Furthermore, if you want something more polished, Park Bar (rooftop, above a car park in Bairro Alto) and TOPO Chiado both offer outstanding views with cocktails. Both are genuinely worth the slightly higher price on your first night.

04 Dinner
Eat Like a Local — Not Like a Tourist

As a result of being a popular tourist city, Lisbon has its share of overpriced, mediocre restaurants near the main squares. Therefore, walk two or three streets away from any major landmark before choosing where to eat.

For your first night, specifically, look for a tasca — a small, unpretentious Portuguese restaurant with a handwritten menu and locals at the tables. Order the bacalhau à brás, the caldo verde, or the daily fish special. In addition, a plate of petiscos (Portuguese tapas) to share is always a safe and delicious choice.

05 After Dinner
Hear Fado at Least Once — Even If It’s Just in Passing

After dinner, walk through Alfama. Specifically, listen for music drifting from open doors — that’s fado, Portugal’s traditional music of longing. You don’t need to book a formal fado dinner to experience it genuinely; in fact, some of the most authentic performances happen in small neighbourhood restaurants where locals eat alongside tourists.

Nevertheless, if you want a curated experience, Tasca do Chico and A Baiuca are both intimate and genuine. Book in advance, since both fill up weeks ahead.

Lisbon is one of those rare cities that gives you something before you’ve even unpacked — if you know where to look.

What to Keep in Mind Before You Go Out

First, Lisbon runs late. Dinner before 8pm feels early; locals eat at 9 or 10. As a result, if you arrive at a restaurant at 7pm, you may find it half-empty. However, this works in your favour — you get your pick of tables, quieter streets, and better photos at the viewpoints before the evening crowd arrives.

Second, wear comfortable shoes. Lisbon’s hills and cobblestones are beautiful, but they’re unforgiving. In addition, the streets in Alfama and Graça are steep enough to surprise you, especially after a glass of wine.

Third, and most importantly — leave room to get lost. Consequently, the best experiences on a first night in Lisbon tend to happen when you put the phone down and follow the sound of something you don’t recognise.

Make Your First Night in Lisbon Unforgettable — With Photos to Prove It

There’s one thing that most tourists realise only after they’ve left: they have almost no good photos of themselves in the city.
