The moment you propose
only happens once

You’ve planned everything — the spot, the ring, the exact words you’re going to say. The one thing you can’t plan? Seeing her face when she realises what’s happening.

That’s what I capture. I position myself discretely — sometimes 80 metres away with a long lens — so the moment stays entirely yours. No awkward photographer hovering. No staged smiles. Just pure, unscripted emotion, preserved in full resolution.

I’ve photographed surprise proposals across Lisbon, Sintra, Cascais and the Estoril coastline. I know the light, the crowds, the angles — and exactly how to be invisible until the moment you most need me.

“A proposal is not a photo opportunity. It’s a private moment between two people — my job is to honour that, and still give you images you’ll pass down for generations.”

Why hire a dedicated proposal photographer in Lisbon?

Your phone won’t cut it. A random bystander will blow the surprise. And your partner certainly can’t hold the camera. Here’s what changes when you hire a professional:

Complete discretion

I arrive early, blend in, and stay out of sight. Your partner will never know I’m there until you show them the photos.

Golden hour mastery

Lisbon’s light is extraordinary — but only for a short window. I time sessions to catch it perfectly at your chosen spot.

Local expertise

I know every viewpoint, every angle, and where the crowds go — so we go somewhere better, at the right time.

Fast turnaround

You’ll have edited, high-resolution images ready to share within days — not weeks.

No awkward posing

The candid shots are the ones you’ll love most. I move naturally with the moment rather than directing it.

Flexible locations

From Alfama viewpoints to Sintra’s palaces to the Cascais coastline — I’ll recommend the perfect spot for your story.

Best places to propose in Lisbon

Every couple is different. Here are the spots I return to again and again — and why they work so well for a surprise proposal.

01

Miradouro das Portas do Sol, Alfama

One of the most iconic viewpoints in the city, with the terracotta rooftops of Alfama and the Tagus river stretching behind you. The light here just before sunset is extraordinary — warm, golden, cinematic. It can get crowded, so timing and positioning are everything. I scout it in advance.

02

Jardim do Torel

A hidden hilltop garden that most tourists completely overlook. Quiet, green, and elevated — with sweeping views across the Baixa district towards the Tagus. Perfect if you want intimacy without the crowds. This is one of my personal favourites for discretion.

03

Belém waterfront

The riverside promenade near the Torre de Belém offers wide open space with the Tagus as a backdrop. Particularly stunning at golden hour, when the water turns copper and the tower glows. Great for couples who love a grand, spacious setting.

04

Sintra — Pena Palace gardens

If you’re willing to venture 40 minutes from Lisbon, Sintra is fairy-tale territory. The colourful Pena Palace set against rolling green hills is unlike anywhere else in Portugal. I photograph regularly in Sintra and know the quieter corners away from the main crowds.

05

Cascais coastline

The dramatic Atlantic cliffs and hidden coves around Cascais make for a romantic and dynamic backdrop. Works especially well for couples who love the sea, wild landscapes, and a slightly more adventurous vibe than the classic city viewpoints.

How it works

1

You reach out — in complete confidence

Email me at martim.dotti@gmail.com with your rough idea: proposed date, your favourite part of the city, and a little about your partner. No commitment yet — just a conversation.

2

We plan the moment together

I’ll suggest the best spot based on your style, the time of year, and the light. I’ll also help you think through the logistics — how to get her to the right place at the right time without giving anything away.

3

Payment confirms the booking

Once we’ve agreed everything, payment secures your date. See all session options at mdfotografia.blog/photography-sessions-in-portugal. I accept Revolut (revolut.me/martimf10) or PayPal at martim.dotti@gmail.com (+€10 fee).

4

On the day — I’m invisible

I arrive before you, find my position, and wait. You won’t see me. She definitely won’t see me. I capture the walk up, the question, the reaction, the first embrace — everything, in sequence.

5

After the proposal

Once she says yes, I introduce myself and we do 15–30 minutes of couple shots together. Relaxed, natural — you’re already on a high. The best portraits of most couples happen in this window.

Simple, transparent pricing

No hidden fees. No packages designed to confuse you. Just honest pricing for an experience that’s worth every cent.

Frequently asked questions

How do you stay hidden during the proposal?

I use a telephoto lens (typically 70–200mm) which lets me shoot from a significant distance — sometimes 50 to 100 metres away. I blend into the surrounding environment, never making eye contact or drawing attention. I arrive early to find the best discreet position before you arrive.

What if the location has lots of tourists?

I work with crowds regularly. Popular spots like Portas do Sol are actually easier in many ways — I blend right in. If you want more privacy, I’ll suggest alternatives or early morning timing when crowds are thin.

Can I see your proposal portfolio before booking?

Absolutely. Head to martimdotti.myportfolio.com to browse my work, or follow @portugal.photoshoots on Instagram for recent sessions.

What if it rains on the day?

We’ll discuss contingency plans in advance. Lisbon is generally sunny, but if weather is truly unworkable, we’ll reschedule to the next available date. Light overcast can actually produce beautiful, soft photography — so light cloud is not necessarily a problem.

When will I receive my photos?

Edited images are delivered via an online gallery within 5–7 days of the session. You can download full-resolution files directly.

Do you cover proposals outside Lisbon?

Yes — Sintra, Cascais and Estoril are all included at no extra travel cost. For other areas of Portugal, get in touch and we’ll work something out.
