What is proposal photography in Portugal?
A proposal session has two halves. First comes the surprise itself, photographed candidly from a distance. Then, once your partner knows, comes a short, relaxed portrait session while the emotion is still fresh. Unlike an ordinary couples shoot, nothing is posed until after the yes.
- Before. We agree the spot, the time window and one simple signal with you, and we scout the angle and the light.
- During. We shoot with a long lens and no flash, at a distance where strangers (and your partner) do not notice us.
- After. A short set of portraits, usually the frames couples love most, because everyone is happy and relaxed.
- Delivery. Professionally edited photos in a private online gallery within 7 days, full resolution and without watermarks.

Lisbon, Sintra and Cascais are within about 40 minutes of each other, so you can choose purely on atmosphere. Each one gives the photos a different character.
River, rooftops and old streets
Miradouros give panoramic city views, the Belém riverside has soft evening light and Alfama’s alleys feel intimate. It is the most versatile option and the easiest to reach from any hotel.

Palace gardens, wooded paths and Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of mainland Europe. It feels the most like a fairy tale and it works in grey weather too.

Porto is a different trip. Our Porto sessions are shot by a photographer who lives in the city, with the Douro riverfront, the bridges and the old quarter as backdrops (see our Porto photographer page). Plan it as its own stop rather than a day trip.
How does a proposal photoshoot work on the day?
Everything is agreed beforehand, so on the day you only have to do one thing: ask. The rest looks like this.
- We arrive before you. We check the angle, the background and where other visitors are standing, then blend in.
- You walk your partner to the spot. A scenic walk or a travel photo is the usual cover story, and we keep our distance.
- You give the signal. One simple cue, agreed in advance, tells us the moment is starting.
- We capture the question and the reaction, then the portraits. Once the surprise is out, we step in and guide a short, relaxed portrait session.

If the weather is clearly unfavourable, we reschedule at no extra cost. We decide together the evening before, so you never stand on a windy cliff with a ring in your pocket and a bad forecast.
How long should a proposal photo session be?
Choose by how much you want after the yes, not by the proposal itself, which only takes a few minutes. We offer three lengths:
Thirty minutes suits one location and a quick set of portraits. An hour gives you time for the proposal, a calmer portrait session and a second corner of the same place. Ninety minutes is worth it when you want two settings, golden-hour light or a longer set of couple photos. What will my proposal photos look like?
Expect a sequence, not a single pose. The first frames are documentary, the later ones are portraits.
- The approach and the question. Shot from a few metres away, so some frames show profiles or backs rather than faces.
- The reaction. The first look, the laugh, the hug and the ring on the hand.
- Portraits after the yes. Faces, eye contact and the scenery behind you, because by then your partner knows we are there.
- Details. The ring, the hands and the place, so the story has context.
That distance is a trade-off we are upfront about: the closer we stand, the likelier your partner notices. The portraits at the end make up for it.
What can go wrong, and how do we avoid it?
- Wind. Cabo da Roca is an exposed cape, so bring a jacket and keep the ring box closed until the moment.
- Crowds. The best-known miradouros fill up near sunset, so we scout a quieter corner or choose a different hour.
- Inside the palaces. Gardens, viewpoints and streets in Sintra are free to shoot in, but each monument has its own photography rules and professional photography may need prior authorisation. Check Parques de Sintra’s image capture page before planning a palace proposal.
