Plan Your Lisbon Engagement Photoshoot
Where to shoot, how long to book, what to wear and when the light is best, written by local photographers for couples who already said yes.
A Lisbon engagement photoshoot is a relaxed hour with your partner at the river, on a tiled viewpoint or in a quiet old street, and one hour suits most couples.
This page is for couples who are already engaged, or just got engaged, and want a Lisbon engagement photoshoot to mark it. If you want someone to capture the moment you ask the question, that is a proposal session, and we cover it on our Lisbon proposal photographer page. Sunset times below were checked in October 2026.
Book one hour for most engagement sessions. Choose the river at Belém, a tiled viewpoint in Alfama or quiet streets in Baixa, and start about an hour before sunset. Thirty minutes is enough for one spot, and 90 minutes gives you two moods. The gallery arrives within 7 days, in full resolution and without watermarks.
What is an engagement photoshoot, and how is it different from a proposal session?
An engagement photoshoot is for two people who have already said yes. Nobody is hiding in the bushes and nothing is timed to a question. The point is relaxed photos of the two of you, with the ring if you like, in a city you chose.
Engagement session
You both know it is happening. We walk with you, give you small things to do and photograph the quiet moments and the laughing ones.
This pageProposal session
We hide, time the moment and photograph the reactions, so planning matters more than posing.
Read our proposal guidesCouples session
No ring needed. It runs the same way; the difference is the occasion, not the format.
See couple photographyProposal planning lives on our proposal photographer page and in our Portugal proposal guide, so we will not repeat it here. For a regular session without the ring, see our couple photography in Portugal page.
Planning a surprise proposal first? Tell us when you book. Ask about adding a short celebration session afterwards, once you are both in on it, so the engagement photos are not an afterthought.
Where should you shoot a Lisbon engagement session?
Pick the mood first, then the place. Lisbon offers three easy ones, in different parts of the city.
- River and bridge (Belém). A wide Tagus promenade with the 25 de Abril Bridge across the water. Further along sits the MAAT museum, whose curved roof is reached by a footbridge over the road and railway line, per Lisboa Secreta. Check maat.pt for current access before you plan around it.
- Tiled viewpoint (Alfama). The Miradouro de Santa Luzia is a terrace with azulejo panels, a long pergola covered in bougainvillea and rooftops running down to the river, as A View on Cities describes it.
- Quiet streets (Alfama and Baixa). Cobbled lanes, tram wires and the Arco da Rua Augusta. This is the most candid of the three, because you are walking rather than posing.
Not sure which mood is yours? Our guide to the best couples photoshoot locations in Lisbon goes deeper, and Belém vs Alfama helps if you are stuck between two. Location scouting is included, and if you choose “Surprise me” at booking, we pick the place for you.
How long should an engagement photoshoot in Lisbon be?
Long enough that you stop thinking about the camera. For most couples that means one hour.
Thirty minutes is enough for one spot and one outfit. An hour lets you walk between two places, slow down and still have time for the ring close-ups. Ninety minutes suits two outfits or two moods, such as the river at golden hour and an Alfama street afterwards.
Each session covers up to two people. You get a professionally edited private gallery within 7 days, in full resolution and without watermarks, and location scouting is included. For the full picture of what a session costs, read our Lisbon photoshoot cost guide.
What actually happens during an engagement session?
There is no stiff posing. We give you small things to do, such as walking, holding hands, whispering something and laughing at a bad joke, and we photograph you while you do them. Here is how it runs from booking to gallery:
- Choose your session. Pick the length, the location and a date on our booking page, or choose “Surprise me” and we pick the spot.
- We confirm on WhatsApp. You message us to check availability or pay by card to reserve, and we confirm the details with you.
- We meet you at the spot. We walk, shoot and adjust the light and the pace as we go. You do not need to know how to pose.
- Your gallery arrives within 7 days. It is a private online gallery with professionally edited, full-resolution photos and no watermarks.
What should you wear for engagement photos in Lisbon?
Think comfortable first, photogenic second. Lisbon is hilly and cobbled, so shoes you can walk in matter more than shoes that match the dress. Our full guide to what to wear for a photoshoot in Lisbon covers every season.
- Coordinate, do not match. Two outfits in the same colour family look better together than identical ones.
- Plain mid-tones. Navy, olive, rust, cream or soft blue sit well against azulejo tiles and warm stone. Tiny patterns can look busy in a frame.
- Bring a layer. The river is often cooler than the streets, and a jacket you can take off is easier than being cold in every frame.
- Think about the ring. Clean nails and a ring you love to look at will be in many of the close-ups.
What is the best time of day for a Lisbon engagement shoot?
The hour before sunset. The light is warm and low, the crowds thin out and the river turns gold. The table below shows when the sun sets in Lisbon on a few sample dates, from sunrise-and-sunset.com.
In December, that means a start around 16:00 to 16:15. We shoot daily between 09:00 and 20:00, so in summer, when the sun sets after 21:00, the warm light we can use is late afternoon rather than the very last glow. Ask us what works for your date.
Pick a date and a mood, and we will check availability and confirm the details on WhatsApp.
Check availabilityHow can you use the photos for save-the-dates and announcements?
The gallery comes in full resolution without watermarks, so the files work for cards, announcements and prints. If you are planning a wedding and want a photo on your save-the-date, timing matters.
The wedding blog Simply Eloped says save-the-dates typically go out about six months before the wedding, or up to a year ahead for destination weddings, and suggests an engagement shoot roughly 8 to 10 months before the wedding to leave time to design and print. If your trip to Lisbon falls at another time, the photos still make a good announcement.
- Ask for wide frames. A shot with plenty of sky or river leaves room for text on a card.
- Pick one portrait and one close-up. A full-length couple photo and a ring detail cover most layouts.
- Tell us at the start. If the photos are for a card, say so and we will keep a few frames clear for it.
How do you book a Lisbon engagement session?
Booking takes a couple of minutes, and you can ask us anything on WhatsApp before you commit.
- Choose. Session length, location and date on the booking page, or “Surprise me” if you want us to choose the location.
- Reserve. Message us to check availability, or pay by card to reserve. We confirm the details on WhatsApp.
- Payment. Card payments carry a small processing fee. We can arrange an alternative way to pay without the fee on WhatsApp.
- Weather. If the forecast is clearly unfavourable, we reschedule at no extra cost, and we decide together the evening before.
- Bringing others? A session covers up to 2 people. More people can join, up to 10 in total, and the booking page has the details. Current prices are there too.

Book your sessionCommon questions
What does a session cost?

How long should an engagement photoshoot in Lisbon be?
One hour suits most couples, because it leaves time to walk between two places and relax. Choose 30 minutes for a single spot, or 90 minutes if you want two outfits or two moods.
What is the best location for engagement photos in Lisbon?
It depends on the mood. The river and the 25 de Abril Bridge at Belém are wide and golden, the Miradouro de Santa Luzia in Alfama has tiles and rooftop views, and the quiet streets of Alfama and Baixa feel candid.
What is the difference between an engagement session and a proposal session?
