You’ve landed
in Lisbon.
Breathe.
Humberto Delgado Airport has a reputation for chaos — and it’s earned. But with the right information, the arrival is just another story to tell.
Lisbon receives millions of visitors a year. The airport was built for far fewer. The result is predictable — and because of that, manageable.
If you’re arriving from outside the Schengen Area — the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Brazil — there’s an extra layer: passport control. Long queues, warm rooms, the weight of a long-haul flight. It’s real.
But there’s one thing that changes everything: knowing what’s coming. That’s exactly what this is — the map before you enter the maze.
✦ Before you leave home — do this now
Enable flight notifications on your airline’s app. Delays are far more comfortable when you know about them in advance — not standing in front of the departures board with your bags.
Your flight is delayed?
These are the right places to look.
Save these links. They’re your allies before, during and after the journey:
What you’ll find —
no surprises.
Especially for travellers arriving from outside the Schengen Area, the journey through the airport takes longer than expected. Here’s everything:
Follow the signs for “Arrivals”
The terminal can feel like a maze — but the signage toward “Passport Control” is reasonable. Follow the flow of passengers if in doubt.
Passport Control — the real queue
This is the hard part. Outside Schengen, queues can take between 45 minutes and 2.5 hours on peak days — July, August and weekends are the most intense.
Sometimes several long-haul flights land at the same time. A small tip: waiting 10–15 minutes before joining the queue can make a difference — though it’s not always an option.
EU citizens — automatic e-gates
If you hold an EU, EEA or Swiss passport, look for the automatic e-gates. They’re considerably faster. You need to be over 12 to use them.
Baggage reclaim
Depending on how long you waited at passport control, your luggage may already be on the belt — or you may still wait another 20 to 40 minutes. Check the screen for your flight’s carousel number.
Lost luggage? Go directly to your airline’s desk or the “Lost & Found” before leaving the customs area. Don’t leave without reporting it.
Customs & exit — welcome to Lisbon
Green lane if you have nothing to declare, red if you do. For the vast majority of travellers, it’s straight through. And that’s it — on the other side of those doors is the city. ✦
More than 3 hours delayed?
You don’t leave empty-handed.
EU Regulation EC 261/2004 protects passengers in certain situations. It applies when:
Your flight departed from an EU airport
Regardless of the airline. If you left Lisbon with a delay of more than 3 hours, you’re protected — whatever your nationality.
You arrived from outside the EU on a European airline
If you flew from the US, UK, Australia or elsewhere on TAP, Ryanair or easyJet, the regulation also applies on arrival.
How much can you claim?
€250 for flights up to 1,500km · €400 up to 3,500km · €600 for flights over 3,500km (US, Canada, Australia, Brazil). Per passenger.
How to claim
Start with the airline in writing. If they refuse or ignore you, contact the ANAC (Portuguese Civil Aviation Authority) or use services like AirHelp or Flightright.
“The chaos of arrival is temporary. What’s waiting on the other side of those doors is Lisbon — and that’s worth everything.”
The centre of Lisbon is
20 minutes away.
Humberto Delgado Airport is surprisingly well connected. Your options:
Metro — Red Line
The most reliable and affordable option. Leaves directly from the terminal, reaches the centre in 20–35 minutes.
Single ticket: ~€1.65 + Viva Viagem card deposit (€0.50).
Runs 06:30 to 01:00
Uber / Bolt
Order the car while still inside the terminal — it’ll be waiting when you walk out.
To Lisbon city centre: €15–25 on average. Avoid taxi drivers who approach you in arrivals — prices can be much higher.
Aerobus
Direct connection between the airport and several tourist spots including Marquês de Pombal, Avenida da Liberdade and Cais do Sodré.
Ticket: ~€4. Slower during rush hour.
