Your Lisbon Cruise Port Day, Planned Hour by Hour
Which terminal your ship uses, how to reach the centre, what fits into six to eight hours, and how a private photo session fits in without risking the all-aboard time.
With six to eight hours ashore you can see two or three areas of Lisbon on foot, sit down for a proper lunch and still have time for a short private photo session, if you plan backwards from the all-aboard time.
A Lisbon cruise port day goes well when you pick one or two areas, put the photos early in the day and keep a buffer of at least an hour before the ship leaves. Below are the terminals, the quickest ways into the centre, an hour-by-hour example and how a session fits. We checked the port, transport and monument sources in October 2026; confirm your berth and times with your cruise line.
The Lisbon Cruise Terminal at Jardim do Tabaco is about a 10-minute walk from the city centre, and Santa Apolónia metro station is 5 to 10 minutes on foot. The Alcântara and Rocha do Conde de Óbidos stations sit west of the centre and are served by tram 15E, buses and the Cascais-line train. Pick one or two areas, be back on board at least an hour before all-aboard, and book the photo session for the morning.
Which Lisbon cruise terminal will your ship use?
The Port of Lisbon authority lists the Lisbon Cruise Terminal, the Santa Apolónia Cruise Terminal and the Rocha do Conde de Óbidos maritime station among its cruise facilities, and the Alcântara maritime station is the port authority’s own address. Your cruise line decides the berth, so confirm it in your ship’s app or port information before you plan anything else.
Lisbon Cruise Terminal
The terminal is at Doca Jardim do Tabaco, next to Santa Apolónia. Its operator describes it as a 10-minute walk from the city centre, with the metro station 5 to 10 minutes away on foot.
Best for: walking in, Alfama firstAlcântara and Rocha do Conde de Óbidos
These stations lie west of the centre, towards Belém. Visit Lisboa lists tram 15E, several Carris bus lines and the Cascais-line train for the Alcântara station.
Best for: Belém first, then back eastAsk which berth before you plan, because it changes your first hour more than anything else. Jardim do Tabaco puts you at the foot of Alfama; Alcântara puts you on the way to Belém.
Tell us your ship, terminal and all-aboard time and we will check the light and plan a route that gets you back with time to spare.
See how Lisbon sessions workHow do you get from the Lisbon cruise terminal to the city centre?
From the Lisbon Cruise Terminal the best transport is your own feet. The terminal operator calls it a 10-minute walk to the centre, and Alfama starts just beyond the station.
- Walk. About 10 minutes to the centre according to the terminal operator. Alfama is on the same side, with steps and slopes.
- Metro. Santa Apolónia station (Blue Line) is a 5 to 10 minute walk from the terminal. The next stop, Terreiro do Paço, is at Praça do Comércio, and Baixa-Chiado follows.
- Taxi or ride app. Both have pick-up points at the terminal. Agree the destination before you set off.
- Bus. There is a stop in front of the terminal. The operator lists routes 206, 210, 728, 735, 759 and 794.
- From Alcântara. Tram 15E runs along the waterfront to Belém and Algés, but Carris flags service disruptions on the route, so check its live notices. The Cascais-line train from Alcântara is the other way west.
- Tram 28. Carris shortened it on 4 November 2025 to run only between Martim Moniz and Largo Camões. Do not build your day around it.
Cobbles, hills and weather. Alfama and the streets around Baixa are paved in small stone cobbles that can be slippery after rain, and the hills are steep. Wear flat, closed shoes you have already walked in. November averages about 18°C by day, 11°C at night and 13 rainy days, according to weather2travel, so carry a light layer. See what to wear for a photoshoot in Lisbon for shoes and outfits.
What can you do on a Lisbon cruise stop of 6 to 8 hours?
Fewer things than most cruise itineraries suggest. Two areas done properly beat four done at a run. The example below assumes a ship docking at the Lisbon Cruise Terminal around 08:30 with all aboard at 16:30. Shift every line to match your own times.
On a six-hour call, drop Belém and stay between Alfama and Baixa; you will enjoy it more. Light matters too. In early November sunrise is around 07:08 and sunset around 17:32 (Western European Time), and the sun stays low all day, so a morning or early-afternoon session still has soft, directional light.
Can you fit a photoshoot into a cruise day in Lisbon?
Yes. The session is the one fixed point in an otherwise flexible day, and we plan around your all-aboard time and choose the area, the meeting point and the start time so that the walk back is already built in.
As a rule of thumb, 30 minutes suits a short call and one place, such as an Alfama viewpoint near the terminal. One hour fits seven or eight hours ashore and gives time for a viewpoint plus a few streets. Choose 1.5 hours if you want Alfama and Baixa in the same gallery. Every session includes professional editing, a private online gallery within 7 days, full-resolution files with no watermarks and location scouting. Sessions run daily from 09:00 to 20:00.
- Send us the basics. Your ship, terminal, arrival and all-aboard times, and how many people are in your group.
- Choose the length. Use the rule above, or tell us how much you want to see and we will suggest one.
- We plan route and light. We pick the area, the meeting point and the start time around your all-aboard time, with a buffer for the walk back. Or choose “Surprise me” and we pick the location.
- Meet, shoot, carry on. You make your own way to the meeting point we agree together. The gallery follows within 7 days, so nothing is left to do on board.
A session covers up to 2 people, and more can join, up to 10 in total, with the terms on the booking page. If the weather looks clearly unfavourable we decide together the evening before and reschedule at no extra cost. A cruise day has no spare date, so tell us if this is your only day and we will talk through a plan B. Current prices are on the booking page; card payments carry a small processing fee, and another way to pay can be arranged on WhatsApp.
Pick a length, choose your date and put your all-aboard time in the message. We will confirm the details with you on WhatsApp.

Viewpoints and old streets
The closest area to the eastern terminal. The Santa Luzia viewpoint and the rooftop views give strong backdrops, but expect steps and slopes.
Best for: a 30 minute or 1 hour sessionPraça do Comércio and Rua Augusta
Flat, central and right on the river, with plenty of places for lunch. It is busy through the middle of the day, so go early or late.
Best for: a short session plus lunchRiverside space and monuments
More open and flatter, with the Padrão dos Descobrimentos, the bridge and the MAAT roof. It is a ride away, so travel time comes out of your photo time.
Best for: 1.5 hours, or a ship at AlcântaraOur comparison of Belém vs Alfama for a photoshoot explains how each looks and feels. With an hour or less, stay in one area. For a short walk to a view, see our guide to the best viewpoints in Lisbon.
What should you skip on a one-day cruise stop in Lisbon?
- The inside of the Jerónimos Monastery. It is closed on Mondays, the cloister opens 09:30 to 17:30 with last entry at 17:00 and the ticket office closes at 16:30 (as of October 2026).
- The inside of Belém Tower. It reopened on 27 May 2026 after restoration, with timed visiting slots. It looks just as good from the riverside path.
- Tram 28. It has been shortened, and queues add to the delay. Walking up from Baixa is faster and gives better photos.
- Sintra. The port lists it as 31 km from Lisbon. Save it for a longer stay.
If your call falls on a Monday, remember that both big Belém monuments are closed. The riverside walk, the Padrão dos Descobrimentos and the pastry shop, which says it is open every day, still work.
Is a long layover at Lisbon airport enough for a photoshoot?
Our rule of thumb is a gap of seven hours or more between landing and your next departure. Passport control can take one to two hours outside Schengen, the metro takes 20 to 30 minutes each way, and you want to be back at the airport about three hours before an international flight. That leaves roughly two hours in the city.
- Check your bags first. If they are checked through to your final destination you can travel light. If not, ask your airline or the airport about left luggage before you leave.
- Stay in one area. Baixa and Praça do Comércio suit a 30-minute session and a quick lunch, and Alfama is close enough to add a viewpoint.
- Tell us your flight times. We plan the meeting point and start time backwards from your departure, with a buffer for the metro and security.
- Leave room for queues. Our Lisbon airport arrival guide explains passport control, the metro and taxis.
Common questions
How many hours do you need for a Lisbon cruise port day?
Six to eight hours is enough for two areas, lunch and a short photo session. Your ship’s all-aboard time sets the limit, so plan to be back at the gangway at least an hour before it.
Can you walk from the Lisbon cruise terminal to the city centre?
From the Lisbon Cruise Terminal at Jardim do Tabaco, yes. The terminal operator describes it as a 10-minute walk to the centre. The Alcântara and Rocha do Conde de Óbidos stations are further west, so use a taxi, tram 15E, a bus or the Cascais-line train.
Is Belém worth it on a Lisbon cruise stop?
It is worth it if you have seven hours or more, or if your ship berths at Alcântara. Allow time to travel, and remember that Belém Tower and the Jerónimos Monastery are closed on Mondays.
Can you book a photoshoot on a cruise day in Lisbon?
Yes. Tell us your ship, terminal and all-aboard time and we plan the area, meeting point and start time around them. Sessions run daily from 09:00 to 20:00, and you choose 30 minutes, 1 hour or 1.5 hours.
What should you wear for a day in Lisbon on a cruise stop?
Flat, closed shoes with grip, because the cobbles are slippery when wet and the hills are steep. Add a light layer, since November averages about 18°C by day.
